The Importance of Dialogue and Subtext in Film

Drawing on the masters of character and dialogue, from Billy Wilder to Paul Thomas Anderson, through clips and practical exercises, this seminar will examine a variety of tools and approaches to developing unique, memorable main and secondary character's language as well as new ways of thinking about character conflicts and power dynamics within any script, through the use of dialogue alone.

Wendall Thomas Bio:
Wendall Thomas received her B.A and M.A. in Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, served as a Klingenstein Fellow in Education at Columbia University and taught English, History and Film at The Hotchkiss School and Deerfield Academy. As a PhD candidate, she lectured on Film History and Genre Theory and taught courses on directors Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, Sam Peckinpah, Robert Altman and Michelangelo Antonioni.

For the last twenty years, she has worked in Los Angeles as a casting director, director's assistant, script reader, story editor, development executive, entertainment reporter, script consultant and screenwriter, writing and developing projects for companies including Disney, Paramount, Showtime, PBS, RKO, A&E, Universal, NBC, T&C Film, ACC Entertainment, Scottish Screen and Gabriel Films.

In addition to writing and story editing, she has lectured in Italy, Denmark, Ireland, Holland, Scotland and France for the Arista Screenwriting Workshops and in the United Kingdom for the Lighthouse Media Centre, the Welsh and Northern Irish Film Commissions, the Folkstone Literary Festival , Screen South and Northern Film and Media She currently consults for the Ateliers du Cinema Europeen Producing Program in Paris and is in her tenth year as Adjunct Professor of Screenwriting in the Graduate School of Film and Television at UCLA.
