FADE IN:

Opening Credits

SUPERIMPOSE: Boston, 2003

EXT. - ALLEYWAY - NIGHT - ESTABLISHING

The rain is pouring over the city of Boston. Thunder can be heard off in the distance. The alleyway is filled with old trash and rusted, metal trash cans filled to the brim with garbage. Despite the street lights, the streets are bare and dark. No cars are on the streets. The drenched and lifeless body of FRANK WILEY is sprawled on the muddy and filthy ground.

The gang leader, HARRY CONNOLLY, mid-forties, is a very tall, dangerous-looking mobster. A large scar runs down the left side of his face. He is stands over the body of the victim with a handgun tensely gripped in his hand. He is accompanied by several other gang members.

BUCK LOXTON, fifties, is a glazy-eyed thug with pale skin and no muscle. He looks like he just rolled out of bed and hasn’t taken a shower in three days. A dying cigarette is still clamped in his mouth.

PAUL ENGELMAN, 49, is a tall, disheveled looking man with worn clothes and muddy military looking boots.

The brothers, JIM and JOE both are wearing black and carry handguns.

CONNOLLY
Leave the body. We got less than an hour.

The group walks quietly back to the car near the alleyway and drives away.

EXT. - JUNK YARD - NIGHT

It is raining heavily. Piles of trash, old car parts and tires clutter the area. The buildings surrounding the junk yard has broken windows and chipped paint. A broken down, rusty truck is parked in the middle of the junk yard.

The car enters the junk yard through an old unused road and parks towards the back of the junk yard. All five gang members exit the car.

CONNOLLY
(to Engelman)
Help me with the suitcases.

ENGELMAN
Ok.

ENGELMAN retrieves the two large suitcases from the trunk.

CONNOLLY
Everyone get ready.

They proceed to a building near the car. LOXTON unlocks the door with an old key. All except LOXTON enter the building.

INT. - JUNK YARD, BUILDING - NIGHT

Everything is dusty. Near the broken windows, there is a large table with scratches and glass pieces all over it. The building is very small and cramped. Rocks and debris are scattered in the room.

JIM, JOE and CONNOLLY prepare automatic rifles for the deal. ENGELMAN tiredly places the suitcases onto the table.

ENGELMAN
(to Harry Connolly)
I’ll wait near the street.

CONNOLLY
Ok.

PAUL ENGELMAN exits the building slowly. He walks to the empty street and secretly removes a cell phone. He nervously dials numbers into the phone.

ENGELMAN
Hi, it’s me. We are at the Anderson Junk Yard. The deal will happen any time now.

ROBINSON
Ok. I’ll send a couple units down there soon. Is that it?

ENGELMAN
No, they saw Frank. He’s dead. Harry killed him.

ROBINSON
Damn!
(beat)
Ok, just stay focused. Forget about Frank. He shouldn’t have gotten in the way...When is the deal?

ENGELMAN
Anytime now...Within the next ten minutes they should get here.

ROBINSON
Ok, just hang on. We’ll be there soon.

ENGELMAN switches off his phone and walks back to the front of the building.

LOXTON
How are you holding up?

ENGELMAN
I’m ok.

LOXTON lights another cigarette.

LOXTON
Everything should go fine. Just give them the suitcases and we get our duffle bag. It’s an easy trade.

ENGELMAN
You’re probably right.

LOXTON
Do you want a cigarette?

ENGELMAN
I don’t smoke.

Two sedans pull into the old road. Six gang members exit the cars. Five are carrying guns.

LOXTON
(to Harry Connolly)
They’re here.

Cut to:

SUPERIMPOSE: Earlier that day.

INT. - BOSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT - MORNING - FLASHBACK

Many police officers are walking around throughout the building. It’s another busy day at the department. Some cops are sitting at desks doing paperwork. The occasional low-life is escorted by in handcuffs.

ENGELMAN enters and immediately meets FRANK WILEY, thirties, at the door.

WILEY
Hi, Paul.

ENGELMAN
How are you doing?

They begin walking to the interrogation room across the building.

WILEY
Pretty good. How’s Laura?

ENGELMAN
She’s doing good. We’re getting ready for that trip to Florida for next month.

WILEY
That’s good.

ENGELMAN
Did you see the game yesterday?

WILEY
Yea, that was a big win!

ENGELMAN
This could be the year they finally win the World Series.

WILEY
It’s just the Yankees I’m worried about.

The Police Chief, KURT ROBINSON, sixties, and COP 1 are waiting for them at the door of the interrogation room. ROBINSON is a balding heavy set man with grey hair.

ROBINSON
Hi, Paul. We were just about to start the interrogation without you.

ENGELMAN
I’m sorry I’m a little late, Captain. I had car trouble.

ROBINSON
No problem.

ENGELMAN
Is the suspect in there, now?

WILEY
Yea, we left him in there for a few hours now.

ROBINSON
(to Cop 1)
Stay here.

COP 1
Yes, sir.

They enter the interrogation room.

INT. - BOSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT, INTERROGATION ROOM - MIDDAY

The suspect, BUCK LOXTON, is sitting, uncomfortably at a table in the middle of the enclosed interrogation room. His hands are uncomfortably handcuffed together. The room is well lit, but has a claustrophobic feel.

ROBINSON
Mr. Loxton, as you know, I’m Captain Robinson and this is Detective Wiley and Detective Engelman...Now, where is Harry Connolly?

LOXTON
I don’t know who you’re talking about.

ROBINSON
Frank, give him the picture.

WILEY slides the picture on the table. The picture shows CONNOLLY and LOXTON talking outside of a building with a green door. On the door, the address number says 53. The picture is relatively dark, but a flood light near the door gives decent illumination for the picture to be taken.

ROBINSON
(continuing)
Now, I’ll ask you again. Where is Harry Connolly?

LOXTON
(reluctantly)
I only met with him once or twice. We talk a little about other deals he made, that’s it.

ROBINSON
What about this deal I’ve been hearing about?

LOXTON
What deal? I don’t know what you’re talking about.

ENGELMAN
A shipment of heroin was bought by Harry Connolly from the Black Market. He’s going to sell it to a gang from Pittsburgh. When will this deal happen?

LOXTON
I don’t know!

ENGELMAN
We caught you last night two blocks away from that house. Connolly and the rest of his gang escaped. Where is he?

WILEY
Loxton, how about if you tell us where he is, I’ll give you you’re pack of cigarettes. What has it been, almost one day? That’s a long time for a chain smoker. I have a pack of your cigarettes right here. We found them in you jacket pocket when we caught you.

WILEY takes the pack of cigarettes from his pocket. There is a plastic bag sealed over the pack. He opens the bag and removes the pack of cigarettes. He places the pack of cigarettes on the table, out of the reach of LOXTON. LOXTON begins trembling and his eyes are fixated on the pack of cigarettes.

WILEY
Tell us where he is!

WILEY knocks the pack of cigarettes away.

ROBINSON
Frank, that’s enough.

ROBINSON knocks on the door. COP 1 enters.

ROBINSON
(continuing; to Cop 1)
Take Mr. Loxton away.

COP 1
Yes sir.
(to BUCK LOXTON)
Come on, lets go.

COP 1 escorts LOXTON out of the room.

WILEY
I’ll start looking for Harry Connolly. I’ll see you later Paul.

ENGELMAN
See you Frank.

WILEY exits.

ROBINSON
Paul, I’d like to have a word with you in my office. It’s important.

INT. - KURT ROBINSON’S OFFICE, BOSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT - MIDDAY

ROBINSON’S office is meticulously organized. There are two large file cabinets in the corner of the room with hundreds of folders neatly arranged inside. A large office chair is behind ROBINSON’S desk while an old wooden chair is in front of the desk for visitors.

ROBINSON and ENGELMAN enter the office.

ROBINSON
Take a seat.

ENGELMAN sits in the uncomfortable looking wooden chair.

ENGELMAN
What is this about, sir?

ROBINSON
What I am about to tell you is top secret.

ENGELMAN
Is it about Harry Connolly?

ROBINSON
Yes, it is. Yesterday, after we caught him, I made a deal with Buck Loxton. I told him that if he told me everything about the drug deal, then I’ll let him go and grant him immunity if he is caught during the drug bust.

ENGELMAN
What did he tell you?

ROBINSON
Connolly’s gang picked up the heroin yesterday. Connolly will become one million dollars richer if this deal goes through. But, Loxton didn’t know what the rest of them will get.

ENGELMAN
What do you want me to do?

ROBINSON
Get undercover with Connolly’s gang. Contact me when you find where and what time the deal will happen...As crazy as it sounds, let it happen. Go along with it. I’ll send some cruisers down and bust them after the deal takes place.

ENGELMAN
What about the other gang with the drugs?

ROBINSON
We’ll have already stopped them.

ENGELMAN
I don’t think its as easy as it sounds getting undercover the night of something like this. What if Connolly doesn’t trust me?

ROBINSON
Loxton has worked with Harry Connolly for one year. He said he’ll tell Connolly that you worked with him a long time ago and that you can be trusted. I wouldn’t worry about it.

ENGELMAN
Why is he doing this? What about the money?

ROBINSON
Loxton doesn’t trust him. He thinks that Connolly will screw him over. It’s happened to other people before. Connolly’s a real con-artist. One of the best I’ve heard of in all my years as the Captain of the department. So now Loxton wants him caught.

ENGELMAN
When will this happen?

ROBINSON
Tonight. Buck Loxton will be released. You will go with him to Harry Connolly’s hide-out. Good Luck.

EXT. - HAROLD CONNOLLY’S HIDE-OUT - NIGHT

A cold, rainy and dark night. The streets are empty. The building is old and run-down.

LOXTON and ENGELMAN walk to the door. LOXTON knocks. CONNOLLY answers the door cautiously.

CONNOLLY
Who’s he?

LOXTON
This is the guy I told you about. I worked with him before. You can trust him.

CONNOLLY stares at ENGELMAN suspiciously.

CONNOLLY
Get in.

LOXTON and ENGELMAN enter the building.

INT. - HAROLD CONNOLLY’S HIDEOUT - NIGHT

It is a very old one building made up of only two rooms. The first room has an old green carpet with a large table and a few chairs. The other room in the back has a couch and two large suitcases in plain view. JIM and JOE are sitting at the table playing poker.

CONNOLLY
(to Paul Engelman)
When did you work with Buck?

ENGELMAN
I worked with him a couple years ago dealing some coke. There were no problems in the deal.

CONNOLLY
I need someone reliable, ok? No mistakes. Think you’re up for it?

ENGELMAN
Yea. When do we start?

CONNOLLY
We leave in a couple minutes. Do you know what’s going down?

ENGELMAN
Yea. Loxton told me in the car.

CONNOLLY
Good. Go with Loxton and load the car in the parking lot.

ENGELMAN
Ok.

ENGELMAN and LOXTON both carry the suitcases out the door and to the car.

JOE
I don’t trust him.

CONNOLLY
Loxton’s word is as good as anyone. If anything goes wrong, he’s dead.

JOE
Yea, but he comes in here the night that of the deal? What if he’s a cop?

CONNOLLY
If you’re worrying about it so much then why don’t you quit right now?

JOE
I’m just saying keep an eye on him. I don’t trust him.

CONNOLLY
Let’s go.

CONNOLLY and the rest of the gang exit.

They all walk to the car. ENGELMAN and LOXTON just finish loading the car. CONNOLLY jumps in the driver’s seat and ENGELMAN sits on the passenger side. The rest of the gang go in back.

The car drives slowly down the road.

EXT. - OUTSIDE THE CAR - NIGHT

Not many people are walking. There are some cars on the road. Rain patters against the windshield.

INT. - INSIDE THE CAR

Grey cloth seats with many stains and dirt laced within. It is very messy and crowded.

CONNOLLY
Paul, why did you wait until now to work with us?

ENGELMAN
I just got out of prison. Breaking and entering.

CONNOLLY
How long were you in for?

JOE
Who’s that!?

Up ahead in an alley way a dark figure disappears into the darkness as the car approaches.

JIM
Stop the car!

The car stops and JIM exits. He begins sprinting towards the unknown person. The rest of the group exits the car and tries to catch up to JIM. The unknown person trips in the mud and JIM begins kicking and beating him. He props the bruised and beaten man up against the concrete foundation of an old building. The gang catches up to JIM. JIM’S shadow moves away from the beaten man’s face to reveal FRANK WILEY.

CONNOLLY
(to Jim)
Search him.

JIM
(Finding his badge)
He’s a cop.
(to Frank)
What the hell are you doing here?!

He smacks WILEY in the face.

CONNOLLY
Who sent you?

WILEY
Ro....Rob...Robinson

CONNOLLY
Robinson!

JOE
Who’s he?

CONNOLLY
Police chief.
(to Frank)
So, he thought you could stop us, huh?

CONNOLLY shoots WILEY twice in the chest. WILEY’S body slumps over in the mud. He is dead.

CONNOLLY
(continued)
Leave the body. We got less than an hour.

EXT. - JUNK YARD - NIGHT

LOXTON
(to Harry Connolly)
They’re here.

Two sedans pull into the old road. Six gang members exit the cars. Five are carrying guns. ENGELMAN retrieves the suitcases from the table in the building. He and CONNOLLY walk to the middle of the junk yard. ENGELMAN drops the suitcases on the ground.

CONNOLLY
Where’s the money?

GANG LEADER
(to Gang member 1)
Get the money!

GANG MEMBER 1 gets the duffle bag and hands it to CONNOLLY. The GANG LEADER takes the suitcases. They walk to the cars silently and drive away.

CONNOLLY
Bring the bag inside.

They all walk inside the building, ENGELMAN carrying the duffle bag. He places it on the table. CONNOLLY opens up the duffle bag.

LOXTON
How much are we getting?

CONNOLLY
Two hundred thousand each.

Several police cruisers speed into the junk yard with sirens blaring and the cops get out of their cars, guns drawn. A police helicopter circles the area. The search light aiming at the door.

JOE
Dammit, the cops!

COP 2
(speaking on a megaphone)
Connolly, we know you’re in there. Come out we you’re hands up!

LOXTON
What do we do?!

CONNOLLY
We didn’t come this far to be stopped by these bastards!

JIM
Is there another way out?

LOXTON
This is the only exit.

ENGELMAN
There’s too many of them. They’ll kill us!

CONNOLLY
Jim, get the M-16s ready.

JIM
They’re all set.

JIM passes out the assault rifles.

COP 2
Connolly, come out now or you will be fired upon!!

LOXTON
Harry, I’m telling you. We don’t stand a chance. They’ll kill us.

Another cop car parks in the junk yard. ROBINSON and a couple other cops exit.

LOXTON
(continuing)
I don’t care about the money, now. I’ll give myself up.

CONNOLLY
No!!!

LOXTON walks out the door still holding the assault rifle by the barrel and he drops it in the mud. The search light follows his every move. Suddenly, some cops shoot at him. LOXTON tries to run away but is shot dead.

CONNOLLY, JOE, and JIM begin shooting at the cops. ENGELMAN hides behind the wall in shock. The cops fire back at the gang. One by one each remaining gang member is shot dead.

The cops break down the door. ENGELMAN is still sitting behind the wall. ROBINSON slowly enters the building.

ROBINSON
Paul, are you alright?

ENGELMAN
(trembling; rising to his feet)
Yes, sir.

ROBINSON
Let’s go.

ROBINSON grabs the duffle bag on his way out. Several cops remain inside and check the bodies. ENGELMAN and ROBINSON exit.

ENGELMAN
Did you catch the other gang?

ROBINSON
Yes, we caught them. About two miles down the road. They didn’t give up a fight though.

A cop zippers up the body bag containing LOXTON.

ENGELMAN
You lied to us. You knew this would happen all along, didn’t you?

ROBINSON
Collateral damage.

ENGELMAN
And what about Frank, he was collateral damage, too?!

ROBINSON
Frank died in the line of duty. He did his job, which was to make sure that you were undercover safely.

ENGELMAN
He told them you sent him. That makes him a hero?!

ROBINSON begins walking away, but stops.

ROBINSON
No witnesses, Paul. It’s something you never understood. All incriminating evidence is destroyed. Frank, Connolly, Loxton.

ENGELMAN
Frank got in the way so you wanted him dead?

ROBINSON
He knew what I was doing. Let’s just say he didn’t agree with the end result.

ENGELMAN
Which was to have me killed during the deal! So it was all about the money?! And what about these cops?

ROBINSON
Under-the-table work.
(to a couple of cops)
Lance...Allan, get over here.

LANCE and ALLAN approach ROBINSON.

ENGELMAN
(suspicious)
What are you doing?

ROBINSON
I’m sorry, Paul. But it’s necessary.
(to Lance)
Lance, take him in.

ALLAN violently pushes ENGELMAN against the old truck and LANCE handcuffs him.

ENGELMAN
(struggling)
Robinson, you bastard...what the hell are you doing?!

ALLAN hits him with a night stick in the stomach.

ALLAN
Paul Engelman, you are under arrest for drug trafficking and possession of an illegal substance. You have the right to remain silent...

EXT. - STREETS - NIGHT

Still raining. A few cars are on the road. There are no pedestrians.

ROBINSON carries the duffle bag and slowly walks down the endless sidewalk into the shadows of the night.

Pretty decent, very descriptive. Dialogue was a little unatural sometimes. The story was very cut and dry. Keep writing, you have a talent.

quite interesting. the dialog was definitely a little forced sometimes, and a few plot points didn't seem totally plausible.
