Cine Singapore: Take Two - Weekly Showcase of Singapore Films

After two months into its run, Singapore’s first local movie showcase Cine Singapore (Cine.SG), is proud to announce the second half – or Take Two – of its line-up.

Take Two kicks off on 17 August through to 29 November 2006, and will screen a total of 14 feature films.

As with Take One, Cine.SG will continue to encourage the next generation of home grown filmmakers to hone their skills and make new films. It will continue to invite filmmakers to interact with the film community, other filmmakers and film buffs at the interactive Q&A sessions and seminars held right after the screenings at the National Museum of Singapore.

Cine.SG has two components: Cine Launch films and Cine Weekly screenings. Cine Launch films will have twelve screenings over a two-week period at both the National Museum of Singapore and The Cathay Cineplex; Cine Weekly screenings will take place on Wednesday evenings- outside of launch periods.

Tickets for all films, all sessions, are affordable at just $8 ($6.50 concessions for Students, Senior Citizens, Full-time National Servicemen and Singapore Film Society members). Tickets are currently available via TicketCharge (www.ticketcharge.com.sg).

Note: Tickets for select Cine.SG sessions at The Cathay Cineplex will be sold directly at the venue box-office.

Collaboration between the presenting sponsor, Singapore Film Commission and the co-presenters National Museum of Singapore and Pulse Pictures.

Coming soon…

Passabe- 17 to 20 August, 24 to 27 August
The remote village of Passabe lies on the precarious border between East and West Timor. It is a battle-scarred community with a horrific past. This film documents a quest for redemption and forgiveness. Passabe was made with a grant from the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund and was in competition at Cinema du Reel in Paris and Hong Kong International Film Festival 2006.

12 Storeys
Set in the heartlands of Singapore, the film depicts three storylines occurring within one day in a HDB block of residential apartments: Ah Gu, a middle-aged man has brought home a pretty young wife from China, but he has to cope with her overly high expectations, and hence increasing frustration and disappointment with life in Singapore; San San lives alone with only suicide on her mind, until a chance meeting with the daughter of her mother's former employer triggers an outpouring of sadness; with parents away, upright but overbearing eldest brother Meng takes the opportunity to lord over his rebellious younger sister, Trixie and little brother Tee. Meng's persistent interest in Trixie's personal life leads to first, an interrogation, then an argument, and ultimately something far more explosive.

12 Storeys was the first Singaporean film invited to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 1997. In the same year, it was also named Best Feature Film at Hawaii Film Festival and won the NETPAC-FIPRESCI Award at the Singapore International Film Festival.

S11
Terence is a lonely clerk resigned to his dead-end job at a jewel store. Ben is a pushover who becomes a hero only in his fantasies. Michelle sells pirated pornographic videodisks after school to pay for her brother’s education. They are complete strangers with nothing in common except for their hard luck and unfulfilled desires. Then, a series of events in one day leads them to cross paths with one another and change each other’s lives forever.

Smell of Rain
A coming-of-age film about the anguish of youth and childhood grief with a twist. Riding on the recurring motif of how the smell of rain transports the protagonist, Xiao Qi back to his painful past, the film explores the bittersweet, heartbreaking, yet tender moments of a young man alone and lost, trapped forever in time. Together with a childhood best friend, Kong Long, he creates a Utopia where the rest of the world is kept at bay; where he is shielded from further hurt. However, the arrival of a girl, Li Er, rudely disrupts the dynamics of their world and Xiao Qi is forced to confront reality, struggling to break free from the prison of his past. In the process, Xiao Qi learns to live and to love – but is it too late?

Smell of Rain was shown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival as part of the Tous les Cinemas du Monde (All the Cinemas of the World) event.
