Just some off the top of my head:

Also:
Amores Perros (same writer and director of 21 Grams)
Night of the Living Dead
The Station Agent
Hard Eight (Paul Thomas Anderson underrated gem)
And one that came out this year: Me and You and Everyone We Know

Ghost World is VERY VERY good. Never seen Trainspotting but heard that was good too.

Amores Perros is one of my favorite movies. In terms of giving gifts, I've picked up as gifts...

Jackie Brown - Tarantino's most underrated

KIDS - My brother loves this movie, now he owns it.

Blade Runner - Classic Ridley Scott

28 Days Later - Danny Boyle's infection flick. He also directed another favorite film of mine, Transpotting.

El Mariachi - Who can't resist a gun toting mariachi put to film for 7000 dollars.

Yeah, they're not full out independent films. I'd also throw Sideways onto your list of indie films. Both Trainspotting and Ghost World kick major ass. Another great film to get someone is Tim Burton's inaccurate but highly amusing 'Ed Wood'.

Larry Clark is a talented director, but I strongly believe he has an underrage fetish. Another one to check out by him is Bully.

If you don't like Gummo then I don't think what you're looking for is "independent" films, all those other films are just fake indie crap. Find some John Cassavetes and Larry Kent and David Secter.

i'm not big on Larry Clark at all. my brother thinks he's brilliant, but my brother is also three years younger than me. he'll learn eventually.

If you say that... then mention Gummo...

Well thats a bold statement.

Funny because Larry Clark and Harmony Korine's films are practically identical.

I haven't seen Elephant - not a big van Sant fan. Bully is fantastic, though.
