Anyone seen it? If you're a fan of Steve Carell and his usual antics, you'll dig it. Being that I'm a huge fan of The Office, I went this weekend and I was not let down. It's a darkly comedic flick.

Between Carell's suicidal character, Alan Alda's heroin addicted grandfather character, and Greg Kinnear's obnoxious self help character, you've got quite the recipe for comedy.

Also, if you get to see it, my aunt is playing one of the pagent judges, the one all the way to the left.

Absolutely loved it. Without giving too much away, the climactic scene was one of the funniest scenes I've seen in a long time. Great movie.

Actors? What actors?

I hear nothing but good things about this, and the trailer looks great. I can't wait to see it.

It was fantastic Perry. It's got the perfect blend of clashing characters, emotional scenes, etc.

And yeah, the climax is possibly one of the most hilarious things ever. Going into the film, I was wondering if they wasted all of the funny parts in the trailer, but I was not disappointed at all.

Carrel and Olive are outstanding. My favorite film of 2006 next to Clerks 2

Yes!

This movie was about two things that should never work in a movie: road-trips and dysfunctional families - and not only did it work, it was hysterically funny, and incredibly memorable. Trunk scene, anyone?

This movie ****ing sucked.

Ok, look, it technically wasn't a BAD movie, but it wasn't good either. None of it was funny. Every gag was hackneyed and predictable. Every character was 1 dimensional. A gay Proust scholar who is suicidal because one of his students didn't love him? HOW WACKY AND QUIRKY!!!!

Or stupid. Greg Kinnear sucks **** and Paul Dano or whatever the **** his name is was terrible. OH MAN ANGST RIDDEN TEENAGER WHO DOESNT TALK...AT ALL! Grandpa who snorts heroin? CAAARRRAAZZZZZZZYYYY!

This movie is overhyped beyond belief. At first, I didn't really care. Now it worries me. This piece of trash might actually win an oscar, while I doubt highly that Children of Men will even be NOMINATED.

What worries me more is that the film is being touted as an "Indie Gem". People think they've discovered an unknown, INDEPENDENT movie, and think it's all "smart" comedy. The future of independent movies, us student filmmakers, who actually want to make things with you know, substance and strong characters might be ****ED because of this. I know that sounds extreme, but "Indie" films have been lingering on the edge of a fad in America now for a while, and this film just launched it over the edge.

Oh, and the grandpa getting stolen from the hospital wasn't funny. It was stupid, and being wacky for wacky's sake. It worked in National Lampoon's Vacation because no one in the family gave a **** about the dead aunt, they barely knew her. In this film, the grandpa is a big part of the family and everyone loves him. He dies, and his own son barely grieves. Instead he just shrugs it off, LETS TOSS HIM IN THE BACK OF OUR VAN, WHO REALLY GIVES A **** ABOUT MY DEAD DAD. Not believable. Not funny.

This movie is bull****.

Nervous Larry, breathe. Every [fictional] movie a is carcicature of something or else it would be a documentary...which is entertaining would be embellished anyway.

I kind of agree with Larry. This movie had a few funny things, but it just followed the "indie quirky comedy" formula, which worked for a few movies in the mid to late 90's but is pretty much beaten to death now (along with the whole ensemble have all these people's lives intertwine bullcrap).

Larry, if you were a little more sensitive to the subtleties of this movie concerning basic human values and the reunion of the family I think you would've enjoyed it more. People don't praise movies just because they're quirky. This had a solid structure, an enjoyable plot and multi-dimensional characters the audience could connect with, played with the most natural acting I've ever seen. I'm not surprised it garnered the praise it did; it earned it. You people have called so much stuff overdone that now being cliche is cliche in itself.

If I had gotten to this sooner I would have said something very closely-related to Ben's post. Yup. Great movie, not overrated.

While I agree with you, Funkbomb...people praised Napolean Dynamite simply because it was sor tof quirky...Nap Dyn sucked, characters had ZERO dimension an dquirkiness was cliche (watch welcome to the dollhouse longbefore you watch napolean dynamite), but you have pepople calling it an indy masterpiece/breakthrough. Barf.

I liked little miss sunshine...it wasn't a masterpiece, but wasn't meant to be. It's a really fun film and the characters are definitely more thna just one dimensional...it was a solid accomplishment when considering what it was made for.

Anybody have a chance to read this week's Time Magazine?

They had an article in there (I think you can view it here - its called SUNDANCE MOVIES ARE BAD FOR YOU! hahah).

Its about Sundance and how "indie" movies got so much recognition before in the film fest because they were so offbeat unintentionally, except now all the films that go to the film fest are intentionally unconventional. Their conclusion is that Sundance is really just another place for Hollywood to find its directors and other sluts and that the festival completely just *****d itself out over the past few years. Thats it, in a nutshell.

Like I said...this film wasn't meant to be a masterpiece or to change the world. Go to Cannes for that.
