During the movie I was like "that would be so funny if it were really modern day and they were stumbled upon it". So you can guess that I was pretty disappointed when it actually happened.

I'll respect M. Night a lot more once he shows that he can make a movie that doesn't revolve around some crazy twist ending.

I guessed it too... but i wasnt really dissapointed tho... i was just saying to myself if he doesnt end his movie this way i will write a movie that way lol. The only reason i think people expected it is because you expect a twist from night. So lets hope next time he fools us with no twist at all or something crazy like that!

Hey its great to read consitent positive responses toward the Villiage, its getting ripped in the media.

Hey all in all its a great film and I consider the big twist to be the fact that his latest "super natural thriller" is in fact not supernatural at all. So much for those who say he's repeating himself. Plus it's a small film and we can all appreciate that.

I wasn't gonna say anything but I can't resist so bare with me here:
and I quote Alan Denton:
"8) The color red was meaningless storyline-wise and was more-or-less put there so M Night can make the lame metaphor to blood being red."

It actually attempts an allegorical theme with our modern madness (color coded threat levels- red being the worst. Read into the subtext there Mr. Denton.) Remember the News update about the war playing on the radio during the scene with M.Night and the gaurd? Or were you to busy looking for flaws?

The Movie is a courageous comment on our times and one of the only feature films lately that even attempts to have a topical vision. Allegorical themes often ask simply for a rational leap of imagination from the viewer, but if you want to look for continuity errors then be my guest, you're missing out. Theres a line from an old Wu-Tang song that says "the dumb are only intrigued by the drum."

And as for Tizzy comparing himself to M. night.... oh well we all know how Tizzy is so why bother. sigh.

Ok, then it was there as a metaphor for our society with no rational purpose in relation to the plot. OK, I can agree with that. But where I come from, symbolism for the sake of having symbolism is lazy, insulting to the viewer, and shows me that the writer is too busy patting himself on the back for making a statement rather than worrying if the film makes sense in a literal context, first.

and since we're playing the quoting game...
"The Movie is a courageous comment on our times and one of the only feature films lately that even attempts to have a topical vision"

um, Fahrenheit 9/11? The Manchurian Candidate?

Come on. The Village isn't courageous. It's not even good. Instead of having a plot that subtly allows for interpretation, it beats you over the head with all of these points and scenes that scream "THIS IS SYMBOLISM!" It's every student film I've seen at college, only with a bigger budget and more talented photography.

Fair enough we'll agree to disagree. Thanks for not overreating to my post I just reread it and realize it came off as an attack! My bad.

F911 aside (it being a Doc and all), as far as narrative film goes its pretty much the only hollywod film that is attempting the analogy to current events. Manchurian falls into the remake category for me with planet of the apes and the Stepford wives. We're talking originality and courage, but oh well i see Collateral (yet another hitman movie) made #1 this week so unfortunaly things are back to the normal formula.

As for your comment:
"It's every student film I've seen at college, only with a bigger budget and more talented photography."
I would disagree, clumsy sybolism I can handle in student films. Its far more embarrassing to see the rehashing of the the 4 standard Student film ideas:
1."Hitman with a Heart of Gold"
2."Heist or drug deal gone bad."
3."A writer with writers block."
4."Farley Bros absurdist comedy rip-off"

(sigh)

I think Chris's 190 posts about flaming had some sort of subliminal effect, did I just apologize?

I LOVE U GUYS! LOL YOU DISAGREE BUT U DONT FIGHT YOUR SO GROWN UP... LOL ok n e wayz now that im done with my "proud father" moment lol. I noticed the red and its relation to the whole war. Beyond hearing about the war on the radio you see it on the newspaper that night's character is reading. I like that cuz he is putting his views out there and he is always saying something about the middle east. Like in signs it was people in the Middle East who figured out how to fight the aliens. But that really has nothing to do with the whole story. I look at this movie in the way that you either love it or hate it. I love it. And for me to fight for someone else to love it too is pointless. Just like Austin Powers everyone loves it, except me and there is nothing you can ever say that will make me feel any diffrently.
