This is a perfect example of just BAD FILMMAKING! I went and saw this film last night, and was baffled at its development and story. Don't get me wrong, it had great potential...but it just didn't deliver. You never see the other side of the story so to speak. The movie is just one monolouge after another by Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall. They stuck with those two for so long, the other characters were completely underdeveloped.
Now the acting was real good, but what is acting without a good story? I'll answer that...A film directed by Kevin Costner
I would suggest that you wait to see this one on video.

How did you not think Open Range would not suck? Of course, it's poorly developed. Kevin Costner is a stupid, washed up has been who has only one movie he can talk about and it came out over a decade ago. It's just like Monty Brogan in 25th hour..."Slavery ended over a hundred years ago...get the F**K over it" but no, he continues to pull favors from his old Hollywood friends who owe him one from "Robin Hood" or something or other. Costner=stupid. I would only see this flick if Annette Bening got naked.

"...get the F**K over it", actually, it's "...move the f*** on".
anyway, as for open range, it did not suck. The first hour and half, were boring if your not into story/character development. (then tho, the development wasn't the greatest, but it was bearable).
i said this elsewhere...but this is one of those "payoff" movies...you sit there, hoping for a great payoff, and you get it! i mean, the last 25 minutes or so were amazing and worth the 2 hour plus running time.
and costner being stupid? i see him making million dollar films (which i'm sure are not all 'favors' from someone, as you say) and he's mastered the 'hit and miss' concept.

last 25 minutes being the best Chypher? are you mad? It had the most cliched romance dialogue, the actors just stopped..err...umm acting, and the cinematography was so static is was a bore. Now maybe you mean the shootout, that was well excecuted. Maybe thats the 25 minutes you were talking about, cause if you watched Open Range for all two hours just to see Kevin run off with Annette i uhh...hate you.

lots of ppl seem to like it, and kevin costner isn't really a favorite of the critics.

I liked it, for the genre. Westerns for me are about moments, not story or acting or powerfull cinematography. It's a much simpler genre. I thought this film had some great moments. Yes it was slow and super melodramatic and predictable, but most westerns are. I really enjoyed Open Range.
And for the record, I really respect Costner. I think he's taken some great risks. So what if many haven't worked out? Some of his risks have worked out. Dances with Wolves, anyone? I only hope I could be a filmmaker that can work the system like him.

dissapoined by the film. thought it could have been better.
he'll never outdo himself, like he did in DANCES WITH WOLVES.
that's power.

now we need to respect Cyphers opinion, but i think the fifteen or so people who walked out during that absolutely positively ****ty lovey dovey 25 minutes near the end might disagree. ill disagree. i cant fathem why youd enjoy watching that, even the actors seemed clueless
