I loved this movie, it was all around a great movie. I have a few issues with the story, but that's simply because I'm a big fan of the Firefly universe. But when I look at it from a non fan perspective I didn't see too much wrong with it, I think I found more problems in Episode 3 than this movie.

Dug it. My only problem was the mixture of genres... I don't mind doing that. I think that could make a movie/story great. I just think that this one went a little too far. I really liked it though - better than anything I've made.
I liked it being a Joss Whedon fan, I'm not so much a Firefly fan though. Harris, this is Whedon's directorial debut. Previously all he did where Buffy and Angel episodes, I attribute that to the TV look.
elliott... w00t! I'm finally a senior.

I actually think that compared to the tv show the genre mixing was very low. This movie had very little of the western feel of the tv show, and more of a sci-fi feel to it.

Western in what way? For a while now I've wanted to make a movie set far in the future in post-apocalyptic Arizona, in which dinosaurs have been resurrected and much of the human population has transformed into radiated zombie mutants. There would be a robot sheriff named Tobor, a town full of hard-assed survivors, attacking zombie "natives," and everyone would ride dinosaurs. The bad guy gunslinger would ride a tyrannosaurus, and the natives would ride pterodactyls. Budget constraints and a dearth of dinosaurs has prevented me from pursuing this project, awesome as it is.
Harris I don't know if you're kidding or not but that plot sounds a lot like my own post apocalyptic zombie western. If you are indeed serious then we should totally collaborate. I've got a crapload of bionic zombie cowboys in my arsenal of hardass mythological characters. And I've got some awesome original subplots to add to the whole zombie infiltration premise. The whole post apocalpytic thing has been done so many times but mine is so messed up it'll make it fresh again.
The only thing is I've got my ressurected hardasses riding rusted motorcycles instead of ressurected dinosaurs. Except for my main gunslinger who is such a hardass that he doesn't need to ride anything he just walks around on foot with two huge revolvers.

Yes, I was serious, though I doubt this project will come to fruition any time remotely soon. I'll go ahead and make some sketches of half-motorcycle, half-dinosaur creatures, though.
I imagined my Sheriff Tobor character would have a running voice-over, though he wouldn't really serve as the main character. He would have lots of lines like this, in reference to his zombie town: "It's tough being sheriff in a town where no one's afraid of dying."
Here's a picture of Tobor atop his triceratops, if you're interested:
It's crude, but you get the idea. And yes, he has hair transplants into his metal skull and face.

Just to answer the question you asked Harris, the show was very much an homage to the western genre, there are a few episodes where western style shootouts take place. I just felt the movie lacked this nostalgic touch. It's hard to explain if you haven't seen the show, but it is evident right from the first episode of the series.

Fash said: lmao Harris is this going to be a comedy like your other projects?
I didn't know my other projects were comedies. Seriously, though, I don't know if it's supposed to be comedic, and I'll kiss my own ass the day I actually make this movie.
I thought of the idea just after I saw Sin City; a friend and I were discussing the only things which could have made the movie even more awesome: Those things were, of course, (a) zombies, (b) robots, and (c) dinosaurs. And I ran with it from there.
If it were funny, which it seems it almost definitely should be, it would be in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way. Lots of over-the-top action, on-the-nose dialogue, and copious dinosaur toilet humor. For instance, any time there's a slow moment in the pacing, I'll just have the diplodocus crap all over the comic relief character. Expect at least a dozen dino-poop scenes.

I saw this and A History of Violence in the same go. I came out of the theater incredibly satisfied. I'll talk about a History of Violence on the page for that.
Anyway, Serenity was a film that I don't see many of these days. The best word I can use to describe it is "fun". Watching this movie made me realize how there just aren't enough "fun" movies out there. The last film I saw that wasn't a dark, cold blooded, drug story (exagerating for those of you who don't know me) was probably one of the Indiana Jones films.
Seriously, adventure/fun films just seem to be in such short supply. This movie made me laugh, and I know some people might call parts of it sappy and chliche but come on...it worked. At least, for me it worked. I came in expecting it to be more cliche than I thought it was, so I was satisfied.
I thought the visual effects were fantastic, although I did recognize a lot of Vancouver in the Miranda world. But those ships were great, I just wished we had seen more of a Star Wars type battle, but it made sense to just focus on their ship.
All I can say is I want to go watch the show.

have soem aliens come into the mix along with a character half bird / half platypus who is a nancy that doesn't like gun battles. A dinosaur can eat him while he's getting plastic surgery.

Kyle your idea makes me wanna puke all over myself. Except for the alien part
Harris- Your movies are more comedy than anything else. The dino poop scenes sound awesome. I think you should totally put this movie at the top of your list and try and git it done. And I want a hand in it.
