I recently saw this Korean movie and thought it was fantastic. I'm not expecting many to have seen this, as it has only been released in Korea [region 3 coding]. I don't want to give too much away, but it has many twists and turns that will keep you guessing, and mainly interested [think 6th sense, I'm serious]. I'm kind of surprised [and pissed] that Fahrenheit 9/11 beat this movie at Cannes. Anybody seen this movie? I also heard that they are supposed to be re-making it for U.S. release with Brad Pitt as the main character.

I haven't seen it, but since you praise it so much it makes me wonder why on earth they'd remake it.

I think its ignorance. People won't see a foreign language film with a bunch of people they don't know. so they remake it with Brad Pitt and everyone jumps, "WHOA! BRAD PITT! I KNOW THAT NAME! LETS SEE IT!" (Watch Stephen Reedy's JOHN'S CHICKEN SUPERNOVA for a good idea of what I mean by this Wink )

I saw part of Old Boy and it was really really cool. And yes, it's true, they're remaking yet another Asain movie shortly after it was released in its native country. This seems to be a new trend. That new movie, "THE GRUDGE," is being remade with the same director, same evil kids (yep, so little time has gone by that the evil kids from the original are STILL kids, hence being able to be in the remake), etc. Is it a good idea? I don't know. It sounds kinda dumb in theory, but I guess time will tell. What I do know is: As far as movie trivia goes, this little info will someday win someone a washing machine on a game show. Which director made the same movie twice? And there you go.

For Old Boy, it's being remade by the director of BETTER LUCK TOMORROW. From what I saw of Old Boy, and from seeing B.L.T., the movie will suffer a great loss in amazing style and creativity and gain a famous American actor and a bigger budget.

Maybe they should just do it the old fashion way...like what they're doing with HERO. Add a little something called SUBTITLES and leave the film as it is.

Yeah, I really don't know why they are remaking it. I understand a little Korean, and some parts weren't translated totally well, but I understood the plot perfectly. I actually stayed up this morning [12-6am] watching that movie twice. As far as it being remade by the director of Better Luck Tomorrow [Justin Lin] I fear for the movie. That kid is way too inexperienced to handle such a masterpiece as this one. And I agree with you on the Brad Pitt point Kyle. It's sad that Americans must have some icon to relate to or else they won't watch a movie. It would honestly be hard for any actor to match what the lead did in that movie.

The thing that pisses me off the most is peopl who complain about the subtitles on foreign films, I figure they're all illiterate and can't read anyways, but I like to point out how it was the 10th viewing of Fellini's 8 1/2 before I ever read any subtitiles because the visual image is more important, plus I've only watched "The DReamers" in french or italian or some other language and it's still one of my favorite films.

yea - what's with that? ok, sometimes i'm not in the mood for subtitles and i want something dumb to watch that goes straight in the ears and dosn't require any inteligence... but subtitles work fine! i basially forget i;m reading them...

once it took me a little while to realize i was watching a dvd with english subtitles AND english dubbing - the voiceover was so bad i didn't hear it as english. also, in The Eye, i didn't realise right away when they switch to english cause the process of reading the subtitles is so transparent to a well trained mind Big Grin

I saw "Old Boy" before it showed at Cannes. A director gave me a copy when we were brainstorming aesthetics for his film. It's pretty messed up.
