If you are really interested in the film try and get a hold of a documentary that was on AMC about "Alan Smithee". For those un-aware "Smithee" is a name DGA members used to use when they did not want their names attatched to a film. It originally started in early Hollywood when studios owned directors and selected their projects for them. Tony Kaye (Director of "American istory X") actually hates the final cut of the film (which he refuses to view) and requested an "Alan Smithee" because he did not want his name attatched. Through time the secret of the name has come out though so the DGA does not allow people to use it anymore. Standard protocl is to submit 5 names you would rather have on there. The DGA offered this to Tony and he offered names like "Porky Pig" and "Daffy Duck". The DGA did'nt find it humerous, and as punishment put his name on the film. Apparently Ed Norton had alot to do with the final edit of the film, and it simply was'nt Tony's vision. He has since gotten back in good with the studio though and there is talk of a possible "Direcors Cut" some day emerging. He says it should be about 3 hours long and be a TOTALLY different story. (They shot an unherad of 500 hours of raw footage) Should be cool if it ever happens. Just thought fans might like that tid bit. R. Michael "Luck, is when opportunity, meets preperation." This has nothing to do w/ American History X (forgive me) but I heard the first cut of "The Thin Red Line" was like 5 hours long before it was shortened. At any indication of how shortening this changes a story has alwasy been evident to me that in TRL Adrien Brody had almost the biggest role but in the final cut hes got like 5 lines, I think tis time for way more director cuts to come out
