i noticed that in all the top ten threads most movies listed were american...so howabout we list our top ten foreign films? or nonamerican films for those that do not live in the U.S? maybe this will help those who havent really been exposed to foreign film...get exposed to it. so here i go (in no particular order, by the way)
-yojimbo (akira kurosawa) -chungking express (wong kar wai) -rififi (jules dassin) -aguirre wrath of god (werner herzog) -good morning ( yasujiro ozu) -amores perros (Alejandro González Iñárritu) -The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (Luis Buñuel) -in the mood for love (wong kar wai) -high and low (akira kurosawa) -roshamon (akira kurosawa)

Wow I was really surprised to see Werner Herzog's Aguirre, Wrath of God on someones list. I just finished watching the film and it was sooooo boring and long. Even though the film is only 90 minutes. Has anyone else seen it?
Oh yeah some of my favorite foreign films are:
Nights of Cabiria (Italian) Ballad of a Soldier (Russian) King of Masks (Chinese) Beijing Bicycle (Chinese) Das Boot (German) Talk to Her (Spanish) Malena (Italian) Amelie (French) Il Postino (Italian) Y Tu Mama Tambien (Mexican) 400 Blows (French) La Strada (Italian) Cinema Paradiso (Italian) To Live (Chinese) The General(I forget)

Hard-Boiled by John Woo (REALLY awesome shootouts)
I havn't seen a lot of Foreign movies but when I do, I can't pernounce the name of the title, therfor I forget the movies. I once saw this one about a girl who gets raped or something....then again thats HALF of Foreign French films.

in regard to aguirre, i can see why you might have been bored by it, i personally loved it. i guess herzogs films are an aquired taste. i liked aguirre because of its strange sense of humor ( like the ship ontop of the tree) and how could you not like the ending wich had hundreds of monkeys everywhere? monkeys damnit!

Did you notice the monkey pooping white s-h-i-t on Aguirre right before he tosses him? It's pretty funny! The ship in the trees is allright, In Ghostdog there's one on top of a building.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Ingmar Bergman? The Virgin Spring, Wild Strawberrys, and oh, that's right, The Seventh Seal. I also like Fellini's La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2; Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless and My Life to Live.
As far as Aguirre goes, I love the film, I can't understand how people can say it's long (it's only 94 minutes). When people say it's boring, I guess I could understand, but how could a forum of filmmakers not appreciate such vivid and haunting images, even if they have no plot significance?
Tarkovsky: He kind of goes along with what I was saying about Aguirre; a lot of people don't like his impressionist style, but I find a lot of it great. Andrei Rublev and Solaris are pretty great films.

I do appreciate the images that are in Aguirre, but STILL it doesn't save it from being boring. No movie is worth watching to me just because it's shot beautifully. At least not more than once. But hey that's just me. I didn't really care for La Dolce Vita either. Nights of Cabaria and La Strada are way better.
