I saw this movie for the first time last night...and wow. I'd been wanting to see the Evil Dead series for awile now...I'd heard a lot about Army of Darkness....actually all I heard was that it was a cool movie with dark humor. I went into the film knowing absolutely nothing about it except that the main character's name was Ash and he has a chainsaw. I know this may sound stupid...but I always thought this movie was set in the future with an army of futuristic Zombies that are taking over the world. The film was infact the EXACT opposite.

One thing I was surprised of was the whole setting. I HATE every movie that is set in the middle ages with castles and sh**. This movie was is an exception. Man it was great...the reason the setting didn't get to me was that it didn't have Bruce Cambell doing dumb sh** like holding up a lighter an saying, "I have made FIRE!" then the pesants going, "We already had fire" (That line is from Black Knight...one of the WORST comedies....basically because not one thing made me laugh.) Bruce Cambell was sooo funny. I knew the film was supposed to have humor...I was expecting maybe 'Pulp Fiction' kinda humor...but this was making fun at itself.

Then there's Ash. This guy rules. The whole film is like a crazy comic book, and Ash is the superhero. And his super stuff includes having a chainsaw hand and a double-barreled shotgun (aka 'BOOM STICK') This film was just hands down awesome, go out and see it if you havn't. I gotta go see the first two now...(I would've seen them in order but they only had Army of Darkness and Evil Dead II...so I took Army 1st)

Best line in the film: "Gimmi some sugar, baby!"

Here's a small portion of the review written by Roger Ebert:
The method of the film is simple. As many action and horror cliches as possible are trashed; the film does for medieval mythology and horror what "The Naked Gun" did for cops. Ash, you will recall, lost his left forearm in an earlier film, and has had the stump modified to act as a mounting for a chainsaw. He fires a shotgun with his right hand, and in case you're wondering how anyone could load a shotgun with a chainsaw, the answer is: It's not necessary, because the shotgun never needs loading.

I hate EVIL DEAD and ARMY OF DARKNESS. They are so f*cking pointless and retarted. I also can't stand Sam Raimi. I respect him I should say for coming this far from those movies, but I hate his style of filmmaking. It bothers me. I haven't seen all of his movies but I hated Evil Dead, The Quick and the Dead, and most especially SPIDERMAN. The X-MEN movies are like 40 times better than spiderman will ever be.

If you want to see a good director at work, Bryan Singer is amazing. He by far my favorite director. It amazes me that he can go from The Usual Suspects to X-Men and make them both awesome. Apt Pupil is good too, but The Usual Suspects is my favorite movie of all time and Bryan Singer is a genious. Christopher McQuarrie is also amazing. One of the best screenwriters out there.

Who is everyone's favorite directors and why?

dude, if you like ARMY OF DARKNESS, you are in for a treat - EVIL DEAD II is the best of the series. by far, at least in my humble opinion. It's fricken hillarious.

singer is pretty good too - i didn't like the first XMEN, but X2 was very very well done. and of course USUAL SUSPECTS great. i think that was one of the first movies to get me really interested in film.

Which one is better?

eh, who cares, Army of Darkness is still great fun. I mean, he's in the middle ages and he designs a new HAND for himself. How can that not scream 'This is an awesome movie!'?

THE EVIL DEAD and ARMY OF DARKNESS are pointless and retarded?? Show respect boy!

Sam Rami took roughly $300,000 and made a completly original film with the first EVIL DEAD. Camera work, and editing that had not been seen before. Actually, it was because of Sam Rami that we have the Coen bros. They didnt have the sack to try and make a film on there own until their buddy am did, and they saw how great it was. What resulted was BLOOD SIMPLE a fantastic Coen Bros film, and the rest is history as they say.

Not to mention Sam has done some brilliant work. If you are simply irritated by kenetic camera work (of which Bryan Singer uses tons of in X2 It didnt even look like a Singer film. Im not complaining. I love his work to, and that style, but he got that from people like Sam) then check out A SIMPLE PLAN and THE GIFT. Both are fantastic films that are nothing like Sam's other work. In THE GIFT Sam actually gets Keanu Reeves to act!! Ok, rant over, my two cents and change. All I can say in closing is all these young new "filmmkaers" who like to stick a camera on a tripod, and have a 10 minute monolouge played out in a wide shot could do worse then check out the EVIL DEAD series, and learn a thing or two about camera movment/placement.

Im not meaning to bash Sam Raimi. I just simply don't like any of the films I have seen of is. Sorry for that misinterpretation there. I do respect him as a filmmaker though. I believe I said that before. I don't normally idolize cult favorites. I just dont get into or like those kind of films. Its just me!

I simply put a reply because Kyle bashes alot of movies that are actually good but backs nothing up. He hates Titanic. I liked it. Whatever who cares. Everyone has opinions. Thats what makes movies awesome. Every film has potential to be liked by someone out there. You just have to find them. Sam Raimi found them, I'm not one of them. That doesn't mean that I don't respect him for how far he has come. He had a wonderful career despite whether I like his films or not. We can all only hope to get as far as he has.

Anyways, Im tired and its early and Im in school. Later.

Army of darkness is a great film. But I have to say that it is a diffrent type of movie then Evil Dead. See the first film was stright up horror. Evil dead 2 was horror but with comedy. Now Amry of darkness is just comedy. Also Sam Rami had spend alot I mean alot of money for special effects in Evil dead.Because there is alot of gore!!!!!!!!!!! Also where else can you see a tree trunk act like a dildo??????

This whole "backs nothing up" thing is starting to piss me off...I'm not starting an argument, I'm not saying I disslike you, and I'm not insulting you Imperial...it's just this pisses me off. I backed up why I didn't like Titanic. I ALWAYS say why I don't like a movie...go check out my "Signs" posts...If you wanna see me back movies up for why I disslike them...read those posts...I went into some crazy detail of how unoriginal it was.

And I'm getting tired of me being brought into posts for no reason...just for the fact I've been labeled for "NOT BACKING UP MOVIES I DON'T LIKE & TALKING SH** ABOUT 'EM"

And what the hell...??? You had no "backing up" for why you don't like Army of Darkness...you just said you didn't like it and Sam Raimi's style? And you say I don't give evidence for why I don't like movies?

I really don't care if you don't like Army of Darkness...I am not saying this in a way of dissrespect, as in I don't care what you think. I don't get offended if someone says they don't like a movie I like...It could bother me less. So don't think I am pissed because you don't like Army of Darkness...and hey...I hated Spiderman.

Yeah Ill admit I didnt back it up. haha who cares. We all get pissed every once in a while when someone doesn't like a movie.

Hell, Chandler Mays called me up at 3AM one night to ask my why I didn't like Fight Club that much just to get a rise out of me and to piss me off. It happens.

Chad, you know I don't like those movies. Shut up faggot. JK. Anyways this is about as pointless as a post can get for me so Im done for now. Later.

Yeah...I read your post. Cool...I'm impressed your determined to spend all that time doing that movie. I find it hard enough getting people to beable to meet alltogether on the same day.

VERY good movie! Do not pass on this one. The first movie has almost nothing to do with the rest of the series, and army of darkness is the best. See it NOW!!
I saw this one a few years ago, and currently own both this and evil dead 2:dead by dawn. As I said, the first one has almost nothing to do with the later ones. Cool

To all but one.
To one but all.
you know what's funny?

That is completely irrelevant...I said I liked Army of Darkness...that makes 2 movies I've seen by Sam. I never said Raimi was a great director...I havn't seen enough of his films. Just because I like a director's movie doesn't mean I'm gonna like every one of their films...I like Robert Rodriguez but I dissliked Spy Kids 2.

I praise Quentin Tarantino but still havn't seen Four Rooms. Doesn't mean I hate his movies because I havn't seen or liked one of his movies.

I'm not about to become a tool by suddenly LOVING Spider-Man JUST for the fact that Sam Raimi directed it. That's being a f****** tool of society.
