I am almost positive that someone here has seen this movie. I think Boondock Saints is an excellent and inspirational film just filled with energy that had a certain student film feel to it. Although it may not deserve to be titled a "cinematic masterpiece" I think that if you compare it on a wide scale, it certainly has more talent than Reservoire Dogs. Some people may want to eat me alive for saying that but thats just my oppinion. However, I am interested in hearing the oppinions of others about this film.

It's a favorite of mine, although I liked it more when NO ONE at all knew about it (I bought it for 2 bucks at Blockbuster). It's got tons of style, and has some pretty good acting chops to go with it. I enjoyed every single action scene, especially the firefight in front of the house, very cool stuff. You are right when you say it is reminescent of a student film, as it does give off that quality. But do not get me wrong, it's well made for the budget it was on, and it does have some powerful, engrossing scenes (one involving a tied up Rocco comes to mind....).
I think it's just fun entertainment, not as good as Resevoir Dogs, but still a fun time.
Yeah, with enough soap, one could blow up just about anything.

Its a great flick, I watched it during winter break with my friends but I only remember select scenes, I'm definatly gonna pick it uip again this summer. After that winter break the movie was the "in" movie to have in my little town, it was kinda cool.

yeah, i love this movie and i agree with you clue, i think it is a notch above res dogs. some of the stuff in it is just so original... i really really like the scene where smecker is explaining what happened in the pool house as the saints are shooting up the place. its very smooth. i've also read the script and interestingly enough, a lot of the stuff that made the final cut is not the way it is laid out in the script--timeline wise. anyway, great movie, caint wait for the sequel. btw clue, have you seen the uncut 'blood' version of the film?
Its currently the number 1 cult movie in my town...everyone loves the Boondock Saints. It beat out Don Hertzfeldt's "Rejected" recently (which also worth checking out). I mean come on, guys randomly shooting up mobsters in Boston (best city ever man) and Willem Dafoe as a gay FBI agent?
"Do you know what the rule of thumb comes from? In colonial times, it was legal for a man to beat his wife as long as the stick was no bigger than his thumb!" "That won't do much damage, would it? Should have been the rule of wrist!"
Yeah, great flick. And for those who dont know, they are shooting a sequel to it now. Written and Directed by Troy Duffy again. If you can, be sure to pick up the DVD copy of the film, and listen to his commentary. Great stuff. Very inspirational. He went to L.A. to be a musician, and wrote that script in his spare time. He just kind of tossed it togthere. A buddy of his worked for a producer (which means nothing) read it, and asked Troy to let him try and get it optioned. Long story short, Troy not only got it made, but also got to direct without any real training, or film making ambitions before hand. If you havent already, you must check it out. R. Michael

Actually I believe I have seen both versions to tell you the truth. I'm not sure if there is more but one specific change that I noticed, was when Rocco in the cafe after finding out that the two guys knew about the conspiracy against him. He shot up the place and there wasmuch more blood. You could see it explode from the skull. This version can be downloaded from Kazaa at DVD quality. It's a shame they didn't allow this movie in the theatres.

yeah clue, thats the blood version. damn columbine kids ruining a good thing and forcing editing and straight to video status.
and yeah tizzy, the commentary is great. love the part where he tells his brother, 'ok, you're handcuffed to a toilet and the mob is about to kill me, what to do you do' and his brother says 'pull the fukin thing out of the ground' and troy says 'yeah, i like that.'
also, boondock has a great website at, supprise, www.theboondocksaints.com where there is a pretty cool script breakdown for the sequel written by troy himself. and, troy even answers his own email's. pretty cool stuff for a 'hollywood' producer.
This movie is a great one. I was introduced to it only about a year ago and it instantly became one of my favorite movies of all time. It's weird though... I've checked every single filmography for Willem Dafoe and BDS is never listed. Sometimes it's almost as if this movie has never existed. If I were Willem Dafoe...this would not be a movie that i would leave off my filmography as it is a great one for it's intelligent plot, great action scenes, unique directing, and all out hillarity at some points. This movie is definately a winner.

What? Did I miss something? NO wonder Dafoe leaves it off a filmography (if that's what it really is); poor Willem Dafoe (who is a great actor) is forced to carry a bad movie, and he ends up dressing up like a woman and seducing a henchman. I admit I don't particularly like Resovoir Dogs, but it at least has a focused story, focused direction, and real characters (played by actors who know how to act). The story, has cool parts, and as far as cult classic goes, it gots the goods, but to go so far as to say "masterpiece" or "intelligent filmmaking" is way too much. I mean, BDS just went nowhere, it felt like the director made scenes up that morning. And don't blame it on production values and budget, because writing a good story is the cheapest part of a production.
