No Evan. Not only china but the whole world especially the usa. We are all responsable.
That's not what I was asking, though. Does the *movie* address China?
Also, it's blatantly false to say 'especially' the US, when China's emissions are going to become drastically larger in the near future. They already use far more coal with the commensurate increase in particulates, and there is very little regulation regarding their own environment (which obviously affects the world). This is in clear contrast to the US, where despite not being regulated enough for some people, emissions are not rising like in China.
Also, I'm not sure what you mean by 'we are all responsible.' Dismiss this as typically American if you like, but your rhetoric strikes me as a European cliche. We can't all live in pedestrian towns/cities and walk everywhere. The reality of America's landscape is totally different from Europe's. Should people drive more efficient cars? Certainly. My commuting vehicle is a motorcycle that gets around 55 mpg. Other than things like that, there is very little that the actual person can do on a grassroots level to reduce pollution other than the obvious things like not pouring motor oil on the lawn, etc.
BTW, what exactly was Gore's "brilliant thesis"? Save us the hassle of seeing the movie and paraphrase it here.
Doesn´t matter if you like the man or not, Al Gore Graduated with honors from Harvard University and his books are read in many Important Universities around the Globe.
From the Independent Newspapper: "Scientists condemn US as emissions of greenhouse gases hit record level
The United States emitted more greenhouse gases in 2004 than at any time in history, confirming its status as the *world's biggest polluter*. Latest figures on the US contribution to global warming show that its carbon emissions have risen sharply despite international concerns over climate change.
The figures, which were quietly released on Easter Monday, reveal that net greenhouse gas emissions during 2004 increased by 1.7 per cent on the previous year, equivalent to a rise of 110 million tons of carbon dioxide."
Conclusion: TODAY America is the number one polluter. In The future who knows...
You are right about China being a huge polluter but the film doesnt blame them in particular. They "blame" the World and the american government for voting against the Kyoto Protocol (The Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change is an amendment to the international treaty on climate change).
The thesis: An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary film about climate change and especially a global warming against this dramatic situation with important numbers and FACTS.
Cheers.

I didn't say anything in my post about whether I liked Al Gore, and what university he graduated from is irrelevant to this discussion...
What specifically was the movie saying, though? That global warming is a problem? Yes. I agree. Something should be done? Yeah. What? Signing the Kyoto accords isn't particularly going to change anything, and claiming otherwise is false.
While simply reminding people that global warming is taking place is fine in and of itself, I do take issue with excessively simple or reductive attempts to pin the blame for the situation on a single source. And electing a Democrat next election cycle will likely change nothing.
BTW, your European Union's regulations on lead-free electronics are patently ridiculous. Has it been publicized across the pond how much compliance is costing, for virtually no result?
Signing the Kyoto accords isn't particularly going to change anything, and claiming otherwise is false.
A: Wrong. The Democrat government (Clinton President) signed the protocol back then and we had a significative change to better. See the movie please.Dont comment without seeing it.
"And electing a Democrat next election cycle will likely change nothing"
A: No.Its terrible to say something like that. We all know that Bush despised the Kyoto protocol and the human rights violations that took place in iraq and guantanamo and dont forget 9/11. In my opinion, Bush policy is all about the conflict thats why the 9/11 happened.
I´m a huge pro-american dont get me wrong.I just blame this government...

yeah man, stop being so hard on china, just ebcause we allow them to be, and benefit from their suppression, its not their fault, if it weren't for their misfortune and oppression OUR LIVES wouldn't be so overvalued and important like we think

Yes, well said. What hypocrisy and absurdity we live in. We Canadians too have oil (and a sh*tload of it), so we are at just as much risk of being liberated too, just beware, we have hockey sticks!

I live in The Netherlands, Europe (altough... Europe is big, and we are NOT states but independant and TOTALY different country's... i get the feeling that some Americans dont even understand that there is not a real 'europe') and we al read about the United States, and we all see Bush on television almost every day, the USA is a big country and yes, we follow the news and president election and everything (in fact, the whole Netherlands is talking about presidents when the USA election time has come...)
I used to believe the USA is a good country, now i believe the USED to be good. Reason: violation of human rights, not listening to the United Nations and so on... Sometimes i wonder if we are dealing with a country from 100 years ago...
I DONT GET IT why the USA is doing all sort of stupid things, when a very big part of the world looks up to them, people geting more and more negative about the USA. I dont think there are many people in The Netherlands who are thinking that the USA is a great country... (Torture people in USA secret CIA cells, and the PRESIDENT is defening that... or saying: 'if you are not with us, you are against us" well...)
But the point is: WHAT THE HELL IS THE USA GOVERMENT THINKING! NOT SIGING THE KOYATE TREADING! Almost every country in the world has sign it! And the USA? well, not them, arrogant as the are...
Sorry, but for me, its become a dumb country under President Bush (altough i dont 'hate' Bush, i just think he is not the right man to lead a -used to be- good nation)

We shouldn´t judge the USA for their president. My president is also a conservative dumbass but I love my country. The USA is a massive country there are all kinds of people.NYC alone has more population than Holland!
Educated people like filmmakers and artists are against war and human rights violations. John Kerry won in NYC and most of California states, remember that.
Bush won because he had a strong support from the "rednecks" and because of his "policy of fear". Ignorant People thought he could protect them from terrorists. Another important thing: Religious Fanatics also voted for Bush. I felt sorry for Kerry, not just because his wife is portuguese , also because he is much smarter (isnt difficult, I must say) and open minded.
I´ve been to the US many times. There are all kinds of people in the US.I met very interesting people in NYC and I could live there for all my life. I also splept 2 days in La (when I went to Australia) i remember the people being very polite and nice.

You make it sound like countries that signed it will actually follow through. The "New" Canadian Conservative government has basically and bluntly said that it has no desire to uphold and enforce and act on Kyotos outline etc, and like anything in politcs, whats said and whats acted on are more often than not (at least today) different from what is done.
Its also wrong of anyone (IMHO) to criticize any americans for voting for Republicans and Bush, honestly, ur better off voting for the enemy you know, a real right wing party, than a fake left wing party liek the american Democrats. Kerry, Hillary Clinton and all those bozos had their chance to vote on the iraq war and they all voted for it, and regardless of their reasons, theres no excuse. Note, I like Kerry, hes a vet which is nice since he knows something about war, would make a better president than bush, or at least more honest, but saying that he "believed" the president when the facts were obviously out there (even Canadian news programs were more than sceptical from the beginning and before the invasion) really isnt an excuse when he was more concerned with how he would "look" to the public.
I'd really be more interesting in seeing what GOOD governments there are out there, and good politicians who are miraculously able to get into power and able to do something without a fundamental sex change.

All european nations like to suck bush ... . The netherlands was one of the first nations to support bush invasion. The others followed them: spain, italy, spain etc France didn´t because they had business in Iraq.
Hey hill, you are right about the bozos. I just think Kerry was the best of the two evils.

I'm not a redneck nor a fan of the policy of fear. I'm also an athiest. Don't make blanket statements. I voted for Bush because John McCain didn't run, and Kerry in my opinion didn't have his **** together.
quote:
Educated people like filmmakers and artists are against war and human rights violations
Again, a blanket statement. I consider myself both educated and an artist, but I'm not against war if it's necessary.
You know why I vote Republican? It has nothing to do with war, or abortion, or human rights. It has to do with welfare and section 8, and the fact that it's being abused and the liberals want to continue wasting my tax dollars on these areas of urban decay. It has to do with the fact that I used to work for the state of New Jersey in Newark NJ, one of the most interesting cities in America, and you should see the crap I used to see. You'd know when the welfare checks came because there would be lots of extra activity at the liquor store. I used to have to walk past a government subsidized housing area where folks used to come down from their porch and try to sell me crack. Funny how none of these idiots have the money to pay their rent (so they rely on the government) or the initiative to get a job (but that welfare check is a life saver,) however they have money for drugs and guns. It's really funny how that works. It pisses me off, I have to maintain a job to pay my rent, buy my drugs and guns, etc.
Don't belittle me because of how I vote. Don't make me out to be unintelligent. You live in Lisbon, Portugal. Come move to Newark, NJ in the USA and see how liberal you want to be.
