This is a cool movie. I watched recently having no prior knowledge about it apart from the fact it contained the line "What we have here is a failure to communicate."
Paul Newman gives a great performance in the lead roll, and the supporting cast is good too.
I do have one question though. Did Luke die at the end of the film? He was shot and I thought he was dead. But then he gave that smile like he knew what he was doing. Can anyone give me some closure on the matter.
Anyways, if you haven't seen it yet, I recommend you check it out.

I've seen it, but it's been awhile, don't really remember too much, just that it was pretty good.

That is one of my favorite movies, but it has been awhile since I've seen it. CHL was shot in the throat (if I remember correctly) and the ending was ambiguous as to whether he lives or not.

My opinion is that they drag him off to the prison/prison hospital. The Good (bad) guys win - ie: the warden and guards; and the Bad (good) guys lose - Paul Newman.

"I'm shakin' it boss. I'm-a-still shakin' it boss."

Good movie. If you liked that one, try BRUBAKER. True story about a prison reform warden in Georgia, starring Robert Redford. Kind slows down at the end, but still interesting.

Has a young Morgan Freeman in a bit role as a psycho prisoner.

I LOVE Cool Hand Luke.
In regards to the ending, my view of it was the smile was because he was looking forward (or knew) that he was going to end like this. He knew he was never going to get away scott free and he would rather be shot and killed than be imprisoned any longer.

To find out if a film ius good, I do the "Hopper test." the "Hopper test" is when I look at the credits of a film and check to find the ingredient "Dennis Hopper." If you find "Dennis Hopper" than the film automatically kicks ***. This aplies to all films. Yes, even "Waterworld." I advise all of you to use the "Hopper test" yourselves.

I love Hopper as much as the next guy, probably more in fact, but you test falls flat in at least one case.
Hopper starred in an Australian straight to video film called The Night We Called It A Day, where he stars as Frank Sinatra. Its about when Frank came to Australia in the late 60s/70s and caused mayhem( read- was a prick!)
A terrible film in every way, including acting by Hopper ( who is really really bad in this)
Oh, also Red Rock West is pretty bad too.

For Hopper fans, check out Rivers Edge, which ( i believe) is his close 2nd best film behind Blue Velvet

Speaking of Blue Velvet (and David Lynch), did anyone like Mulholland Drive? Because I know I loved it. And plus: Naomi Watts is really hot in that movie, as she is in all movies.....But she's especially HOT in this one, if you know what I mean Wink

You get a clue that Luke is going to die in the end because the warden tells them to take him to the prison hospital, and one of the policemen says "he won't make it to the prison hospital" and the warden answers with "he's a prisoner, he's going to the prison hospital"

or something like that
