We are all filmmakers here (or involved in someway) and we all obviously watch a lot of movies. But I was wondering what movies had a deep impact on everyones lives?
For example, I saw Saving Private Ryan in theaters when I was 11 and it changed me forever. I never thought about war the same way ever again and I realized why veterans deserve the respect and admiration they get. To this day, it remains one of my favorite films of all time.
Movies to be have been an art form for my whole life. Mostly movies inspire me to write. The movie that got me into screenwriting was "Just Write," Bruce Lee movies have taught me alot about life ~ how it could be beautiful but ugly at the same time. Some movies that just inspire me so much are Good Will Hunting, Adaptation. Crow has taught me to appreciate life to the fullest and live each second of it.
What I believe in isn't scary, it's what I don't believe in that is.

quote: they stand up for their entertainment value but also say something about the kind of society we live in.
Could you explain what you mean by this? I don't think Kubrick's films say mch aout society at all...maybe a little from A clockwork ORange...bt still...he's no Spike Lee.

ok, mr. johnson. i will explain this to you so that you may be able to understand it, ok?
2001: this picture deals with human evolution, and the paths we have taken to evolve. it deals with our dependence on technology, i.e. HAL 9000 computer, and how technology could possibly take over the human race. another film dealing with the same themes which you might be aware of is Terminator 2, though its storytelling is different.
Full Metal Jacket: this deals with War and its affects on society and the human spirit. it shows how war is man's most uncivilixed creation, and what its purpose holds--nothing, death, destruction.
The Shining: deals with the human psyche and the supernatural.
A Clockwork Orange: deals with a government's control of the human spirit in an attempt to change it for their purposes. fascism, violence, total control and other themes surround the film.
if you would like any other information, check out the library for a change, and read how film has the power to reflect society.
you might learn something.

not traditional film kid responses but....Terminator 2 and Tommy Boy....I just love both of those movies, obviously for different reasons. I could watch both, over and over and over...

Uh, i guess, "Do The Right Thing" by Spike lee-teaches a lot of lessons. Also, "Eddie Murphy: Raw"- taught me to laugh, learned a Bill Cosby impression.

Ok, studentfilms.com, I will explain this so that you may be able to understand it, ok? Because I am obviously more gooder in the ways of sounding intelligenter than all ya'llz.
Shaolin Soccer: It taught human kind that if you kick a soccer ball hard enough, it will turn into a fireball shaped like a puma.

All this argument over Kubrick was not the point of this topic that I had in mind...more if there was a film out there that changed the way you think or act day to day. Not how "good" Kubrick was at storytelling about society. You wants to talk Kubrick, start your own post and argue there.
I don't know if it changed my life or the way I think completely, but I thought it was a powerful film, it changed the way I think about films, and I guess you oculd say it changed some of my perceptions about life in general.

The Shawshank Redemption: The greatest film ever made. Completely changed my opinion on film from being a casual admirer to a fully focussed... film... guy.
also,
Wet Hot American Summer: A film that was so cheaply made and so in-tune with my personal sense of humor that it made me say, "hey, i can do this!"
And this was perhaps the first time ever that The Shawshank Redemption and Wet Hot American Summer were (seriously) discussed together as having the same general effect...
Saving Private Ryan....for a second there I thought Chalifour copy and pasted my thoughts on that movie and its effect on me that I posted on another thread. Made me love film, made me realize it's more than entertainment, made me want to do this for the rest of my life.
Yeah, with enough soap, one could blow up just about anything.

Dude...there was no argument. I just wanted him to explain to me how Stanely Kubrick showed society...there were 4 posts about Kubrick...one from him saying he liked him, one me asking how Kubrick showed society in his films, then him Kubrick777, replying, and then some random guy saying that the post made sense. Where was the arguing? Nowhere.

Several films have made an impact on me. In no particular order:
BILLY ELLIOT - a lot of guys don't like this film because it's about a boy who dodges his boxing lessons and sneaks into a ballet class, but it's really about striving for your goals. His dad and older brother are very macho guys and this isn't a good thing for the kid. Very well made flick and very powerful.
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN - My father was part of the D-Day invasion - a member of the 101st Airborne dropped at the wrong place at the wrong time. He told me that story, when I was younger and it didn't mean too much to me then. Now it does (though I can't tell him!).
THE BIRDS - scared the human waste out of me when I was a kid and I have watched that movie over and over since.
ROAD TO PERDITION - Just beautifully filmed and orchestrated. My favorite movie of 2002.
Just my opinions. Good topic!

Hell yah!!!
I saw this movie when I was like 6 and it scared me. Funny part is a week after I saw it we, my family, went to Disney Land...and before we left out the main gates...in this big courtyard...there was like a billion seagulls (well it seemed like a billion...I was 6 years old ) And jesus...it was scary...I try not to ever give seagulls a bad look...you want them on your side if they ever decide to go homicidal.
