Alright, so it's not so much a samurai movie, in my opinion anyway, but it was still an enjoyable movie. This is an "alternate time-line story," meaning that you need to get over the fact that a Civil War soldier is fighting with samurai. Anyway, it was a good movie with beautiful sets and costumes. The story was alright and the action was pretty cool. I thought I'd hate the hell out of this movie, but was pleasently surprised. It was two and half hours long so set aside a little bit of time for watching it. It's not the samurai movie I would've made, but it was still fun.

I thought this movie was great. Reminds me of Dances With Wolves a little, which I also love, but thats fine. If a movie is going to copy another movie, they must do it well, and The Last Samurai surely did. Hope Ken Wantanbe gets nominated for best supporting actor cause he was awesome. Also the war scenes at the end were absolutely stunning. Pretty gory too. Great stuff. Props to Ed Zwick. Not sure if its better than Glory, but its pretty damn close in my opinion.

Anyone else?

This movie kicked ass. I think it was very well done, and Cruise played his role well. A tear jerker as well, although for the record I did not cry [The guy behind us did though . . . ]

This Movie was....WOW...Screenplay of the year. This movie was just unbelieveable! I loved every frame, and if Jon Toll doesnt win best cinematography, I will seriously be pissed!! I have seen it twice already, and I am seeing it agin tonight. If you have not yet indulged...Please do, its worth it!

Well, my hopes weren't very high for this because I was looking for an old school, Kurosawa inspired samurai flick. And if I didn't get then I was just hoping the movie wouldn't suck too much in general. Even though it worked for this movie to have the modern, fast-cut sword fights, it would've been cool if there was at least one moment of the ol' five-guys-die-in-one-shot scene that the older samurai movies have. I always liked those scenes. I also thought the score was a bit heavy handed in the beginning: "Oh, let's play 'traditional oriental' music for the Japanese guy, you know maybe rip something off from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3." Also, I guess you can't have a movie like that without doing the same battle scene as Braveheart or the Patriot, but hey, the samurai made it cool. So it wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but I was still pleased with it.

I tried to see it... but the night before it openend, I mysteriously hit a deer. Which really screwed my chances for the opening night...

Hopefully tommorow.

I remember looking foreward to this movie since I saw the trailer at either Reloaded, or Dreamcatcher.

Well, after reading what all of you have said. I guess I will give it a try. Honestly, I didn't have high expectaions for this film...mainly because there are so many other choices for the leading role (not much faith in that Cruise boy at all). Also, I didn't what it to be a great movie gone bad because those who work on it didn't know what in the hell they were doing. But I will see it and hopefully I will we be just as happy as you all seem to be.

I promised myself I wouldn't read this thread until I watched the film. And I finally went to see it yesterday. I was fortunate enough to see it DLP projected (which looks awesome ... I am totally sold on DLP, but that's another topic).

I liked the film much more than I expected. I did see it as a samurai movie. There were definately some Kurosawa homages in there. I think Kurosawa would have liked this film. And some of Toll's work was brilliant. I didn't think Tom Cruise ruined the film, either. My biggest disapointment was in the ending ... it was too happy. This film would have worked much better as a tragedy. So yah, go see it. If you can see it DLP projected, even better.

Yeah fantastic film, if you like epics. If not stay away.

Tom pulled it off and there were some brilliant moments. Tom also did his homework and it showed.

***POSSIBLE SPOILER***

The one on four fight was fantastic. I loved that they showed the fight in all its speed and glory then had Tom Relive it in his mind as if it all happened to fast for even him to understand. "To much mind."
