it's very japanese in it's editing and the way it dotes on the shots. it's not bad, i like it, but the way Americans edit and pace their movies, it's definitely different, and actually some people in the theatre could be heard yawning and sighing and rustling.
but the one scene with the geisha dancing, as it crosscuts from childhood to adulthood of the dance, was BEAUTIFUL, and some people were sniffing.
also, the dance number at end was EXCELLENT.
**** i wish more american movies would do that. musical films are OUR forte for christ's sake. and yet if you did a serious drama, and then said "hey let's put a musical number somewhere here in the middle, where people do a choreographed dance or something" the studio would put you in the stockades and laugh at you.
and yet it's brilliant when Beat Takeshi does it.
sigh.
