this movie is amazing. its the Wachowski brothers wet dream in terms of style. but was already a post about this film so ill stop compilmenting and start questioning:
what the hell happened to this movie? I looked at its box office and it grossed JUST over 1 million and was in only 301 theaters? correct me if im wrong, but a film of Equilibrium's grandeur and budget, deserves a larger release than that! i mistook it for a straight to video sci fi channel schlock fest when i first saw it. Why did Miramax give it such a ****ty release?

Yeah Mirimax crapped on it. In terms of budget it was extremley lean concidering it was an action movie with such scope but a great final film.

Mirimax feared it was "too much like the Matrix" Too much like Farenhieght 451 perhaps but not every trench wearing, gun slinging film is a Wachowski rip. They bassically did a small release just to justify higher cable and video sales. Much like Boondock Saints a gem that never got what it deserved.

Boondock Saints rules. Saw it a few weeks ago, one of my fav movies now. Boondock was not able to be shown because it would have released shortly after Columbine and people feared the whole killing and the characters wearing trench-like coats was too similar.

And equilibrium is cool.

American Psycho I feel has some of the best dialogue and acting to ever be in a movie. Christian Bale was Oscar material in this film, he was dark and hillarious at the same time.

and American Psycho did ****ty at the box office due to bad marketing. And its never recognized as being a very great film. IT grossed only $15,047,419

Because Forrest Gump rules.

I didn't mind Recruit...had some very strong moments.

BigBudget, I never said that I liked any of the movies I listed, I just wanted to give the broad scope of highly popular hits from those 2 years..
Anywayy... the answer to your first post is that the film was kind of forced to only a few theatres. It was suposed to be released close after 9-11, and the government did'nt want the public to revolt because of the war efforts we were about to take (at least that's what I heard). But IMDB says "The film was not given a wide release because it had already run into profit as a result of overseas sales, and Miramax didn't want to risk turning a money maker into a loss.
