I think the movie Zulu should also be mentioned in this thread. Definately a great film (even though it had scenes where no gunshot wound was present but the people would grimmace and keel over). They got to record real Zulu tribe war chants (these can be heard in the beginning of Gladiator when the Germanians are doing a war chant) and had real zulu tribe members in the movie.
quote: This was a REALLY good movie, I liked it because it didn't try to create some fake story to go along with it, it stuck to the facts, thus earning high ranks in my book.
Wasn't this like the worst military fiasco in the Clinton administration? Casue they really made no note of it in the post 9/11 all american patriot "leave no man behind" bull****.

"And really, in my opinion, I don't think QT is the type of guy that should be directing a war movie. He will totally glorify the violence. And that's not what should be done in war movies. I'm skeptical on this. I love Tarantino, but I don't think this is right for him."
Glorify violence. How do you do this in a war movie? Older war movies did this, new ones are all about violence and gore. Kubrick I think glorified the violence in Full Metal Jacket (the sniper scene, all the blood splurting out in slow motion)
Tarantino has got 3 WWII scripts he's written, and I think he'll totally change the war movie genre, cause currently I think its stupid. Example, Black Hawk Down, that movie sucked. It was all action. Then when characters died we're expected to care, but there's absolutely NO character development (i lost track of characters names too, along with actors) Stupid movie. Good action scenes, but no character development of plot kills that.

Most Vietnam movies seem the same to me. But some are great.
Platoon Casualities of War
But when I watch war movies I usually know what to expect, so I judge them by originality. I don't mean make situations that didn't happen. What I like to see is different takes and creativity in story and cinematography. So here are the top five, ever.
1. Saving Private Ryan: Incredible story and acting, and direction 2. Tears of the Sun: So realistic it was scary. Amazing acting. So much is unsaid in the movie. 3. Black Hawk Down: Once again realistic in depecting the intesity of their situation. Great Acting. 4. Platoon: Showed the insanity of Vietnam better than Apocaplypse Now. Classic. 5. The Deer Hunter: Some of the best performances. Craziness. Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken need I say more?
All of those movies are extemely realistic, not just in violence, but in how those situations actually were.

I was captivated untill the very end. i watched SAVING PRIVATE RYAN again the other night an it made me realise just how great it was. In my mind, it is undoubtedly THE BEST I've seen.

yeah that civil war charge at the end was so realistic it was scary...or confusingly stupid. I agree it had prety good performances and decent score, but goddamn, once they took that town where the women were deformed...film went downhill into the bowels of war film hell.
