Anyone else here counting the days until Michael Bay's next film, The Island, is released? I really don't care what other people think, I love the guy, he has a certain style (love it or hate it), and he's one of the most sucessful directors of all time (so no, he's not a "hack"...a "hack" is Uwe Boll or Renny Harlin who have had mostly failures at the box office). The casting of Johansen and McGregor are interesting, especially for this type of sci-fi/action hybrid. So far the reviews (all six of them on rottentomatoes.com) have been positive.

It looked like crap in the trailers, but I'll have to wait and see what comes of it.

Michael Bay is a hack.

If by "style," you mean "yellow-tinted lens filter," then yes, he has one of those.

I don't mean to bust your balls, BigBudgetPlease; this is just my way of saying I disagree with you. The premise for The Island sounds like it picks up right where Brave New World left off (and I never liked the end). However, I doubt there will be much in the way of science fiction in this film. The name Michael Bay screams "action!"

And what the hell has happened to Ewan McGregor as of late? He drops his indie acting roots and suddenly signs onto a big-budget Hollywood pseudo-sci-fi/action film under a lame-ass director? He's never done that before. Oh, wait... actually...

Yes because all Michael Bay does is place a yellow tinted lense filter on his camera and say action.

And your definition of hack states unpleasant or distasteful tasks that are undertaken for money or reward. Bay loves the stuff he does, and so do the average movie goer according to the box office. Sure he makes "pop corn flicks" of varying sorts but thats all he says his films are. He's not proclaiming The Rock as an Oscar winner or Armageddon to be Bruce Willis' best work...(although I know Bruckheimer and Bay did sorta hype up Pearl Harbor, but it's all in advertising). He makes stylish fun movies for the masses. It's the vocal minorities that hate him.

That' true. I'm a vocal minority, and Michael Bay makes a hell of a lot of money making movies that I hate. I respect him for that, and I respect you for your opinion of him. He is pretty good at action, for Christ's sake.

OK, enough. Juan, you are out of line. Harris, try not to start flaming back. I've closed the other topic, but this one is fairly new and I'd rather not kill it in its prime. The flaming ends now.

all i have to say is michael bay knows how to make a movie that people will watch for 2 or so hours.

he is the definition of a sterio-typical action director (it shows in his films) and without him, we wouldn't have that.

Okay, whatever. But what i dont know is why you want to talk about movies when all you care about is money. Then you call Michael bay a hack when you probobly are one too. Just look at his profile.

This is ridiculous. Before seeing the movie, youve all made your definite statements on whether this movie will be good or bad. All these opinions based on one trailer. Has anyone else seen the original Star Wars: A New Hope trailer? Its completely horrible, but that doesnt mean the movie itself is in any way bad. Remember the trailers for The Village? The movie had almost no resemblance to the trailer in both plot and genre. It makes no since to preassume facts based on so little information.

Juan you're not getting Harris' sarcasm, so just don't worry about it.

Brain, they're not going on just the trailer. As you can see by this post alone Bay has a reputation for making vapid action movies. Honestly though, this trailer hasn't shown he's changed for this movie. Aside from showing Michael Bay's stunted growth it also showed way too much of the movie. Thanks to the trailer, we know that one of the Ewan McGregor's gets shot, thanks ass****s. We also get to see one of Steve Buscemi's jokes that honestly shouldn't work out of context, what the hell is up with that?

Don't get me wrong, I grew up on these big action adventures. They are what made me get into film. However, since deciding this is what I want to do, I've grown and realized it takes more than a few strategic explosions to make a good movie. Movies like Terminator 2 and Batman Begins and, hell, Fight Club even all show that you can have a smart, stylized, entertaining action movie and not be a hack like Michael Bay.

There are plenty of movies to be excited about and counting the days for. Michael Bay does not make movies worthy of such excitement. Just don't get me started on Transformers.

dude dont tell people what movies to or not to get excited over. im looking forward to The Island. i hate Peter Jackson, but I'm sure lots of people here will say they're excited for King Kong. I've seen the trailer, I think it looks awful, and I'll probably post that, but I won't say people are wrong for being excited for it. And I will SEE the movie before I make the any real comments about it. So what the hell? I love Bay films, I'm excited for his latest flick, obviously there are many Bay haters here, but it's all good.

Yep. Action movies in the hands of James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, or David Fincher are a pleasure, because these directors know how create dramatically sound, artistically valid films that happen to contain action. Michael Bay starts with action and works backwards from there.
