I recently watched Magnolia again and found myself a little... impatient with it. That surprised me. I really enjoyed it the first time I saw it -- I was blown away, really.

Granted I'm not as familiar with all of PT Anderson's work, but if I had to choose between one of his films and one by Wes Anderson, I'd take Wes Anderson.

Why? Higher probability that I will enjoy it. PT is one of those filmmakers that makes great movies, but I don't think the ride is... well, as enjoyable as it is with Wes Anderson. Not in a Jerry-Bruckheimer-explosion-every-two-minutes kind of way, but a slow-burn, emotionally gratifying kind of way.

Other thoughts?

No, yeah, I dig it. I understand the criticism.

I love Wes Anderson too -- but, you know, is Wes Anderson going to make a movie about the porn industry in the 70s and 80s or early American oil men? Wes will tell us the same story over and over again, about father/son or sibling relationships, and it will always be wonderful, but it will never really be challenging. I think PT Anderson goes after more serious subject matter, bigger subject matter -- he fails more too -- but I'll always appreciate that about him.

Oh, and PTA kind of destroys Wes in the acting department. Think about Scottie in Boogie Nights.
