The Andrei Tartovsky (or however you spell his name) one, not the crappy remake with George Clooney. This movie was very strange, in a good way. It was also just beautiful and creepy to look at. I have no idea what the hell it was about but I loved it! Anybody have any interpretations of what the hell it may be about?

check out the discussion boards on imdb, they usually have some good insights as to what movies "mean."

some interpretations of what I read were really interesting, but I think the film is too trippy to ever figure out.

I haven't seen all of Solaris yet, but what makes you say the Soderbergh remake is crappy? From the parts I've seen, it's a warmer, less ambiguous take on the original. Not necessarily bad, just different. FWIW, seeing the remake may enhance your understanding of the original. Same for reading Lem's novel. I understand the ending of the film is significantly different.

Some other classic Tarkovsky films include Stalker and The Sacrifice. I thought The Sacrifice (his final film) was slightly dense and tough going, but Stalker is a masterpiece. I intend to see The Mirror in the near future.

I didnt like the remake because I felt it just didnt work (not to mention it didnt need to be remade) The original is so brillant and beautiful to watch, films opening with Chris walking around the lake is probably the best filmed cinematography I've ever seen. None of that was in the remake, the remake just seemed like a typical movie, nothing thought provoking, new, different. the original Solaris is open to infinite interpretations, the remake is narrow minded (in my opinion) I'll check out the book and Tarkovsky's other films.

the freeway scene was intense, with that weird music.

GOD NO KANE! The original is BRILLANT! The onyl thing Tarkovsky's and Soderberg's have in common is that the guy sees his wife again. Thats pretty much the only thing in common with the two. Remake is crap, I watched some of it t today and couldnt believe it. Watch the original Kane, I cant guarantee anything, but its not what you'd expect.

I dunno i'm a big fan of both. Soderbergs version isn't a remake, its a different film that uses the same novel as a basis.
