The book changed my life, the movie is fantastic. Depp plays the good doctor fantastically well, and Benicio turns out an over-the-top but wonderful performance. I love this movie so very much, and it is probably my favorite comedy this side of spinal tap or swingers. But read the book, if you haven't already because it may just be the best thing you ever do with your life. Hunter S. Thompson is an iconoclast and one of the most important people in this country's history. So watch this film, tell me what you think, then go out and read the book and tell me what you think. Gilliam's direction, and the way they follow the book is magnificently well done and there is absolutely no one who shouldn't like this film.

No, but from what I understand, Ask the Dust is a novel set in the depression, right? Fear and Loathing is very different in that it's more than a story; it's a way of life, and it's difficult to explain. It changed my entire outlook on life, especially this country we live in. It should be required reading for anyone looking for inspiration to work to facilitate change in our world. Anyway, this thread I guess can be about both the book and movie, so please comment.
