I made this discussion about a year ago...lets bring it back up since we have so many new contributors to the forum.
just take a film genre and name your favorite film from it and a reason why you like it.
WAR Apocolypse Now - I used to hate this movie except for a few scenes....now I love it. Coppola is brillant. The helicopter attack and aftermath scenes are the best scenes EVER PUT ON FILM. The whole surfing scene with Robert Duval is great, cracks me up everytime. Crazy, surreal, weird, hillarious. THis war movie has everything. More should be like it. Runners up: The Boys of Company C, Halls of Montezuma, All Quiet on the Western Front
ROMANCE Annie Hall - Woody Allen is hillarious and knows truely what cinema is about. His sarcasm is so hillariously witty. The dialogue is just great in this movie. I usually don't like romance movies for their clichedness, but this one is so much more.
The Sure Thing - Really fun 80s movie thats about a guy and a girl on a road trip to California.
ACTION! Terminator II - Real great and stunning action sequences. It never gets dull.
Robocop Series - Lots of action and a pretty cool futuristic Detroit. Lots of gore too.
SCIENCE-FICTION Robocop Series - These movies are great. One of the few sci-fi movies that actually makes me think, "Hey, this could be the future" Its got hella action, hella gore, and hella crazy guns.
A ClockWork Orange - Movie is so awesome, the dialogue is what makes it so original. Its good because in future times our slang dialects WILL change, and this is one of the few futuristic films than understands that concept. Runners Up: Alphaville
WESTERN Once Upon a Time in the West - Oh man, cinema doesn't get any better. Probably one of the best film productions ever. The best director with one of the best casts, with one of the best composers. Nothing short of brillance. I love this movie to death. Runners up: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, Rio Bravo, Hombre
HORROR The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (ORIGINAL ONE!) - The cinematography makes this movie so memorable...what a way to think of Texas. Every shot in the van you can feel the heat on the characters. The hitch-hiker scenes is still one of the freakiest scenes ever on film, that guys is just whacky. Gotta love that ending too.
Carrie - I just watched this movie again today, first time I saw it I hated it. Then I watched it again and I wanted to cry. Poor Carrie. Everything was going her way until those ass kids. Man I hate those kids. You really feel sorry for her when she's being made fun of, then you go home with her and find out what she's going through with her insane mom. PLus you root for her when she's going crazy with her mind on those kids.
CRIME Pulp Fiction - My favorite movie of all time, I can't say more except that I think this is one of the few movies where I can honestly say that every frame is perfect.
Man Bites Dog - This is an obscurity I think everyone needs to see, its a fake documentary that follows around a killer who murders people to make a living, he's not a hitman, he simply kills people to get cash. Its great watching and learning about this character, he's such an awfull character but after about 20 minutes into the film you love him. Real great dialogue and surprisingly natural acting. Fantastic film. Not neccessarily runners up...but some other good ones: Scarface, Carlito's Way, Reservoir Dogs, Goodfellas, Casino
I'll put up some more in awile. Contribute!

i dont know if my films will fit into the categories right, but we'll see...
WAR - Apocalypse Now Gotta agree with kyle on this ine, poc is amazing, only films that come close are platoon and thin red line
ROMANCE - The Graduate Don't know if it counts but the closest thing to a romance i ever liked was
ACTION! - To Live and Die in L.A. One of the films that has influenced my own work the most
SCIENCE-FICTION - Kubrick - 2001: a space odyssey or Clockwork Orange (the one guy whom u could find a film of his that could fit into any category) Whether its 2001: a space odyssey or Clockwork Orange, hes the best at it and i cant say on over the other
WESTERN - Unforgiven Sure i loved the leone westerns like everyone, but this film signified the last gas of a dying breed of film that changed the scene
HORROR - Deliverence May not be scary to some, but this film scared (and scarred) the **** outta me, reminds me never to walk into the bushes alone and to saty away from kids with banjos
CRIME - The Godfather
Now id like to make some mentionings of films i really like but have no idea where to put em: 1. American Psycho - The best 2. 8 ½ - Fellini's finest work 3. Days of Heaven - more poetry than film, but still great 4. Taxi Driver - ****in eh And lastly i had two films i really liked so i made a category for them, it is the............
DRUGGIE - Requeim for a Dream/Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas These two kick ass

It's questions like these that make me feel rather inexperienced as a film viewer. One's job in that realm is (thankfully) never done. Here are those that come to mind:
WAR Titus - This may be a stretch, but I'm fairly underexposed to this genre. In any case, this film brilliantly indicts the desire for revenge that fuels war in general. Julie Taymor is almost certainly the best modern female director, in my opinion.
ROMANCE Annie Hall - Yes, this is one of the most honest looks at the romantic relationship.
Benny and Joon - Something of a guilty pleasure, but has yet to grow old. Others: Manhattan, Sidewalks of New York
ACTION Fight Club - It is categorized this way, which I think undermines its brilliance. A fantastic film under countless circumstances.
SCIENCE FICTION Clockwork Orange - Would you believe they made this story into a musical? Not much new to say on this one.
CRIME The Man Who Wasn't There - As again seen here, genre category do little good for the films that transcend them. A wonderfully poetic piece on amorality, spiritual immobility and a case of other elements.
Sexy Beast - I'll have to watch this film for a third and fourth time before I fully commit to it, but this has some finely crafted complexities and Ben Kingsly sets fire to everything around him.
ANIMATION Waking Life - This might be the equivalent to a month of meditation, or maybe that's the euphoria talking. I am rendered speechless.
DOCUMENTARY Crumb - This is definitely one of the most honest portrayals of an artist.
Bowling for Columbine - Flawed, but unsinkale for now.
These could easily change as I better educate myself.

there are so many great movies i hate making a list cuz i hate chosing but here is some i like
Drama 25th Hour- Edward Norton is amazing, the pacing is really slow but you really get drawn into the situation, also puts the whole 9-11 drama into every day life not hiding it like most movies do.
War Saving Private Ryan- Just visually amazing... the whole D- Day scene gets to me everytime it seems so real
Romance Romeo and Juliet- Baz's version something about it just astounds me, the fish tank scene is amazing
Action 3 Kings probobly I like the way it was edited and it made me laugh
Crime Pulp Fiction and Resevoir Dogs- LOVE the character interactions. Mr Pink is one of my favorite movie characters to imitate
