I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happened. She has always had the child she just never remembers him, because he always does the same thing in the end to make everyone else turn out okay. That's why if you listen she says TWO when she is talking to him after the gypsy lady and then at the end of the film she says THREE still births. Meaning she is speaking to yet another child.
