Ooh! I meant to rent that a long time ago! Thanks, Fellini. I'm actually leaving right now to see if I can find it.

that sounds ridiculously awesome.

However they lied about it being the longest shot in film history.
I know Andy Warhol made a movie that was just one shot of the Empire State Building for 10 hours straight or show. (from sun-up to sun-down)

And what exactly is the point of Russian Ark having 3 live orchestras?

Yes indeed. But empire state is not actually a master shot.
Russian Ark is kinda of boring but a must see for camera operators

I believe it's the longest uninterrupted take in film history. Andy Warhol probably had to stop the camera and change reels from time to time.

First off - Sokurov is a great director.

Second - Russian Ark was not actually a single continuous take. There are 3-5 edits that have been carefully blended in post-production. This could either be due to performance issues or the drives that they used filling up.

FWIW, it was shot on HD.

It is the longest shot for a dramatic film, in the history of film. Was shot on a HD camera tethered to an array of harddrives that was wheeled on a cart behind the steadicam operator. Incedentally the director of photography and steadicam operator is Tilman Buttner, the steadicam operator behind Run Lola Run.

Which pretty much makes him the awesomest steadicam operator in the history of the universe.

Probably, but are you sure? How long is the largest uninterrupted take, 30-40 minutes? As I said above, it's misleading to claim that it was all one take.

From imdb: Shot in a single take. The first three attempts were cut short by technical difficulties, but the fourth was successful.

A single take Evan, the camera didnt stop recording.

Cheers

I forget where I read that there were some concealed edits - I can't find it now.

Anyway, Timecode is one minute longer and was made first.

Interesting. 24 seems to have borrowed the most from this. It's always difficult to attribute it to any one source of inspiration, but this has the split screens, the real-time and Xander Berkeley.
