This movie looks really interesting. It seems to be based off a the biblical story. I am personally a big fan of both Brad Pitt (Fight Club, Spy Games) and Kate Blanchett (The Life Aquatic, LOTR Trilogy, and Bandits). Check out the trailer!!!

Yeah. It looks like it could be quite good - that depends on whether Inarritu and Arriaga can keep their typical political statements from becoming too cloying and heavy-handed. Amores Perros is still his best film, although a lot of people liked 21 Grams at first.

Ya, I really like the look of it. I actually had no idea this was being made until I saw the trailer- was this a Munich-style cover up to protect those involved or something? Or did I just miss it?

Just so you know, Angus, it's spelled Cate. No biggie, I'm just a spelling freak.

Actors? What actors?

I think you just missed it, considering that Cannes was in May and it had premiered at that point.

I saw it today. Wow! By far, the best film I´ve seen in 2006.Its a perfect film in all levels: direction, acting , editing and cinematography. The director deserved evrey gram of the palm d´or that he won in cannes.
Its a "multiple plot" film much wiser and human than crash. Go see it NOW! Smile

I strongly disagree. Babel was the most disappointing film I saw this year. Well made but a crappy simplistic script that has no message and more coincidences than should be legal. A major letdown and just as manipulative and false as crash. The Brad Pitt/Cate Blanchett scenes are some of the most cliched i've seen in quite some time.

Avoid unless you want to be majorly disappointed.

But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

oh boy, i thought the all movie was very anti-cliche.So real and raw. Maybe is another love it or hate it case like marie antoniette.
we all are different people and understand art in different ways. I respect that. But I say it again...babel, for me, is the film of 2006.

Just saw this movie and thought it was a bit empty. It was an interesting story but I wasn't sure what I was supposed to get out of it.

Genesis tells the story of how early man refused God's order to spread out and populate the earth and instead built a huge building/city as a monument to their own independence and power. So God mixed up their languages so they couldn't understand eachother which caused a lot of confusion and choas and made them divide up into smaller communities.
Babel (the film) deals with the same theme of tension caused by language differences.

i just saw babel yesterday... i must say, i was VERY dissapointed. i felt that i could write a better script than that. it was better than crash, but cliche in so many ways. such a letdown after it won the golden globe monday night. the departed kicks babel's ass.

I went to this last night, it was pathetic. I ended up walking out after 40 minutes. The story does not engage the viewer at all:

SPOILER, but I guess it wouldn't spoil anything because the movie itself spoils your time and money

Honestly, who in the audience really cared when Blanchett was shot? No one.
The story was nothing to be proud of, unless after the first 40 minutes it improved ten fold, which is unlikely. I definitely agree that it was cliche, the characters were in the perfect mold of troubled movie characters. And the music, wow, that won a Golden Globe? This is definitely the worst movie of 2006 that I saw.

I think the biggest problem was that the movie was trying so hard to be profound but that was all the filmmakers really cared about. It was clearly inspired by Crash, but the only difference is that Haggis did a better job.

But I'm flabbergasted that the Hollywood Foreign Press thought this was better than The Departed. That shocks me.

This bull**** was terrible, I just saw it on DVD. So empty. So boring. Everyone in it was a complete ****ing moron. All they did was make horrible decisions.

The only good part was Rinko "love him long time" Kikuchi. And it didn't hurt that she was showing off pretty much every part of her for most of the movie...

Pa-rum pum...

Just thought I'm post the closing line from the review for Babel from Slate.com

and in the process makes Crash, another recent film with converging stories and a multicultural cast, look like an undergraduate term paper on race relations.

I saw Babel and liked it. I also saw Inarritus other films and they're all good. But Babel could have done better.
