Hi there. My name is Phil Anderson, I live in Akron, OH and I'm 17 years old. I'm new to this site and to film making in general, but I am really interested in getting some films out there, and eventually on to this site. Well, thats pretty much the bio...

Anyways, I have this idea for a short film and I wanted to see if you guys could give me some feedback. The initial idea is this:

(No title yet) -Comedy, Drama-
Josh, a care-free college student still living with his parents, has decided that pants are holding him back. He refuses to accept that the norm of wearing pants is anything but an arbitrary tool of oppression. But his reckless behavior and his stubborness are destroying his relationships with family and friends. He struggles with the classic dilemma of choosing between the comfort of conformity and the comfort of...comfort.

Let me know what you guys think. Its only an idea so far; I haven't really started any prep work or writing or anything. I just wanted to see what other people thought before I started a whole project.

Thanks a lot,
-Phil Anderson

It's an original idea. I would say that you should see what you can make from it and post your progress on the internet.

The most important thing is to just get out there and start filming. Get yourself some experience. The no pants story sounds like it could be a fun watch. In other words: go for it.

That sounds like a great idea for a movie. You should start planing out what you want to do. But you have to be careful about putting ideas up because someone could steal it.

come on guys it doesn't sound gay. It's being lazy to the point of ridiculousness. From that plot summary, I'm imagining him as a character like The Dude from The Big Lebowski

uhm... Are you just saying that because that's the popular opinion here? Sounds to me like your a fake crowd follower. Maybe its just me, but I have a suspicion that you saw that guy say its gay and then you thought ud respond and agree with him because you didnt want him to think YOU were gay! I dont understand how you can go from "Wow! sounds like a great idea!" to... " wow, that sounds kinda gay, I woudnt want to watch it."

Somethings fisshy here...

REALITY CHECK!!!!

I wouldn't really think it would be gay if he wore like really, really thick boxers but anyways i like the message. What's more important pleasing urself or others. Thats what i got out of ur small summary but if u could convey it with something other than the removal of pants then that would be better.

I appreciate the feedback guys, but could you try to be a little less homophobic next time? How is not wearing pants gay? Do straight guys always wear pants? Do gay guys never wear pants? If the main character was a woman would she be a lesbian? would we even be having this convorsation? When I asked for feedback, I expected something more than the middle school approach. Whata ya say we grow up...

I don't think the posters were using the word "gay" in a middle school, homophobic way. I think they were using "gay" as middle school, derogatory adjective, meaning "not a good idea". In either case, we definitely went "off-topic"!

That said, I think the story is a good idea. It's certainly different. As long as you have the idea as to what the pants represent (why he wants to not wear them) and how (or if) he returns to wearing them, it has a chance of turning out decent.

I would have never thought of it - so good luck with it. Keep us posted if you start shooting.

Josh doesnt want to be told how to live his life. Its a requirement that pants be worn at any time outside of your house, and he feels that that is an unecessary restriction. He doesnt believe that someone should have a set of rules to abide by when getting dressed, or when living their life for that matter (obviously he's taken it to the extreme).

I guess the point I was trying to get across was that some of the laws in America can make you question the title "the land of the free..."

And I want to convey this point through Josh and his dilemma, but in a humorous way. His concern is a real and a serious one, but by focusing on the pants as a representation of everything people are expected or required to do, it adds a sort of funny spin to it.

It makes sense. Go for it. You would just need some situations where Josh is chastised and/or putdown for not wearing pants, and those giving him grief are also breaking some sort of societal rules, but in a more 'appropriate' way.

I'm not sure what those would be - maybe like a rolling stop at a stop sign, smoking in an non-smoking area, playing loud music in a public place, etc.

Bad examples by me, but it's all I could think of on short notice!

Good luck.

Well its a good concept, and it sounds like what your trying to convey is well backed, but personally, I would have to disagree with that belief. Im not saying that it wouldnt make a good film, or that u shouldnt do it... if you believe in it fine.. but I personally think that the concept behind that is that your a rebel and not all laws should be followed? Yes, this may eb the "land of the free" but its not anarchy. Of course there are laws and rules, AND IT IS OUR DUTY to abide by them. We are to respect and obey authority. While I think some traffic and many other laws and rules are REAL stupid, I dont go around breaking them cause I dont feel like it. If I feel really strongly about somethign that isn't right, I go about to change it in an "orderly manner." I just dont think that the topic is necesarily true.. and when people dont agree with what you are tryin to say, they will probably be mad at the film, or you, and not want to watch it.

Thats just my two cents. If you fel strongly about it, go ahead. Im just stating my personal opinion.. not necesarily what other people might think as well.

I probably did not explain myself well - and I'm certainly not trying to write the script! Wink

What I meant was that the protagonist refused to wear pants because he felt it was 'liberating', but everyone that condemned him for not wearing pants were breaking the little nitpicky laws. So the conflict as I saw it was the protag wanted to do something he thought as harmless, while everyone else told him it was wrong, but broke laws every day. The protag had to come to terms with that.

I wasn't really meaning that it's OK to break laws.

And, if you weren't talking about my post, my apologies! Smile

your in akron,ohio...in a seinfeld episode george flew from manhattan to akron to make a good comebackjoke to this guywho said"hey george, the ocean called, their running out of shrimp!"cause george was wolfing down shrimp at a business meeting....so george's comebackis, "ohyeah, well the jerk store called...their running outta you!"

"so the guys response is, "whatsthe difference...your their best seller!"

so george takes kramer'sadvice for a comeback, "welli had sexwith yourwife!"

then a guy whispers in george'sear, "his wife is in acoma" which is ironic cause half the episode was kramer thinking about what would happen if he should go into acoma.
