...why are there still a bunch that have "this movie was awesome man" and then 5's all across the board? thats obvious that those are probably just people who are trying to boost the ratings. I'm seeing quite a few movies that are crap with high ratings, since people are reviewing them.

i like this site. it's a great site. unfortunately people need this ego where their really crappy film needs a high rating, and it becomes a pissing match. anyone who makes a movie that wasn't well recieved and doesn't boost their own rating with faux reviews, I respect. However, I'm getting sick of people having their friends and family come on and boost the rating for a crap movie.

The only reviews that are screened are the ones that are unnecessarily hateful. It's not like we have a team of monkeys sitting there saying "oh, this is a good review, let's post it!" or "this one is from a family member! Deleted!"

All film sites have review systems like this. We can't stop people from getting their friends and family to give good reviews. The best thing you can do is give honest reviews, and maybe those will offset the ones that annoy you. That's at least what I try to do, and generally it seems to work.

yeah, i understand that. i just think it misrepresents the movie when it's got 6 reviews that are all 5's and then 4 honest reviews that actually help out.

have you thought about a criteria, possibly writing a certain amount of words or something? perhaps that would offset the amount of people who write five words and jack up the ratings.

We don't want to do anything to discourage people from reviewing. One of the main draws of submitting a film to this site is the amount of people that view and review your film, and we don't want to diminish that.

Well, doesn't it inspire you when you see a film that has a boosted amount of great reviews to write an honest review about it? Smile

There's no way I really can verify reviews. There are alot that don't get through just so you know.

Like all fives and "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...OOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!"

Also reviews that say "you suck" and all 1s don't get through either.

u know now that we're in the area of ratings- what can we do about the rating system's minor falacies? Some people watch, say, a documentary, and give the "acting" only 1 star since there is no "acting" in the film- but 1 star would imply that the "acting" was bad-

can we fix the system? or fix how we rate films that are absent of these certain grading criteria?

a couple of people would give things like "no acting" three stars- or combine it w/ another category that wasn't absent

anyway whatever- thnx

I have thought of adding an n/a option as well as a requirement for a review description (text that you would have to write) for each review category that you choose instead of just one big broad review writing space - thus forcing reviewers to organize their reviews and critique each general aspect of the film.

Chris,

Somebody added a review to my film: "A Short History of Street Performance" saying the following:

These mediocre documentaries can't dominate the "best reviewed" list

- jim j

The review gave the film all 1's. Is there anyway to get this taken off??

it'd be nice to not rate a film on acting when it doesnt apply, and not ding the film because of it. I generally just give all 5's in the categories that I can't rate it on. And I've always spelled W00t with 2 zero's instead of o's, thats just the street in me I guess.

Ya I agree that there is a big problem with morons who inflate their own reviews, and morons who deflate other peoples' movies' reviews, but it's not a problem that can really be solved. I don't really care all that much, I told all my friends to give my movie (Film 1) an honest review, and they all did. A lot of them gave it a very mediocre review. If it bothers you that other people have undeservedly high reviews, don't compare your movie to theirs. I know my movie is better than it's been reviewed to be so I don't feel bad that it's only gotten 3 stars.

what about people reviewing their own films?
i guess that's kind of what zimmerfidget said...but his friends did it hardcore on "one shot".

just an opinion...but i think that's unfair.

isn't there a way to screen for that?

sorry bigmovie, maybe you misunderstood my post. i never said adam had any part of "one shot". i said his friends boosted their own ratings on "one shot". not him.

btw..i think you said "illiterate" when you meant "ignorant". just a heads-up. using "illiterate" would imply that i did not know how to read, instead of simply not having the facts straight.

i agree that making it mandatory that you show your email address on a review would be a good idea. most of the reviews on the site that give all 1s or 5s are indeed from people who wish to remain anonymous. good idea, bigmovie!

also: i hope this reply doesn't seem angry in any way. if it does, i truly did not mean to represent myself in this manner. i simply wanted to get the fact straight that i had the facts straight...in the first place. confusing enough?...oh well.

i really agree. i'm sick of this whole mess.

i'm going to leave the issue alone, especially since it has nothing to do with me. i just felt like commenting.

however, the whole thing is annoying so i'm going to just ignore it from now on.

whoo!

Yes I agree the review system must be reworked in the future somehow.

In the meantime I am deleting all blatantly obvious fake name reviews that come in. I used to leave them because sometimes the review text was actually quite good sometimes.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.
