I like the idea of using CustomFlix. They seem great.

actually, single layer dvds (i.e. 4.7 GB dvd-Rs) only hold 4.4 GB of data. And how many minutes depends on how you compress the audio and video. You can do 2 hours of video (including any motion menues) at 4.7 Mbs average. 90 minutes at 6.3 Mbs. Depending on the encoder and how well it works, 2 hours at 4.7 Mbs will look really good. With some encoders you could go even longer (like 2hrs 20 minutes at 4.0 Mbs video). That's assuming you're only doing 2.0 stereo ac-3 audio. If you're having that customflix place author the disk for you, you gotta make sure they're using a decent mpeg2 encoder.

If you're planning on authoring your own disc, to calculate maximum bitrates, you can get an excel spreadsheet from this guy's website if you register email. It's helpfull for maximizing quality without trial and error.

If I was going to make an official Studentfilms.com DVD with some of the top films from the many different genres, would people buy it?

If so, what would be a reasonable price?

Perhaps I'll look into it.

I'd buy it!!!

I think a reasonable price would be $10 including shipping.

I'd purchase (depending on the films of course)
I think it'd be interesting if you did like several different types of DVDs...like start right now with the best of. Then next year maybe "Best of 2004" ect. That'd be fun. How many films do you suppose you can fit on one DVD, Chris?

Oh, and I think it'd be tricked out if we could get the filmmakers to RECORD a commentary for their film....get some insightfull stuff in that...and maybe some behind the scenes photos of the production, production notes, storyboards, ect. I dunno. I mean, this is just something I WOULD want out of a DVD. Big Grin

I'm putting together a possible list of films now depending on film length for a "Best of" DVD.

Also, any film with copyrighted music will definitely not be able to be on the DVD. It is one thing for me to remove a film from the site if anyone complains (doubtful but possible) - it is another thing to remove it from a DVD in print.

$10 is a good price. I'm not sure about including shipping with that cost however. We'll see.

Best Regards,

I think that rules out most of the films on this site.

But it is a necessity unfortunately.

in the other mirror topic of this we talked about just having the filmmmaker change the music to something original, either by composing their own, using royalty free, or having a composer do it.

Could that be an option? Just having the filmmaker do some changes? Cause I'd be unfortunate for some of the films not be able to get on the DVD cause of illegal music use.

If someone needs an original music score re-written to get on the DVD, I can offer my services for free for now until I get well established. I am a musician that would like to get into writing films scores. Demos can be heard at http://www.geocities.com/sdcomposer .
