Is it just me, or does it seem to jump out to anyone else that like 90% of the reviews on most of the lesser films are praising the filmaker for everything he did wrong? I just saw one, where i stopped watching because it was so horribly done, where the camera was all oer the place, editing was horible, acting and story was pathetic, and then when I looked at the reviews, people were saying: "acting superb, camerawork perfect, and the story was genius!"

Who are these critics?!!! I dont get it! Is it just that these guys just dont know jack about what the elements are in a good film, or are they just high?

Please, lets get some real critique on this site so people can learn from their mistakes, not praised for them.

I've written a few while high. Wink

Yeah...but I totally agree....some real crappy films are getting good reviews for some reason. Maybe it's simply from a guy who's never been on the site before and never seen a student film so he thinks what he saw was great.

We just had a topic about this like....3 days ago. And in it, Mind Rite said he was paying a dollar a minute for his film to be on here, because he wanted to see what people would say.

If people aren't going to say anything worth while, then he is wasting is money. I don't know what the motive for giving horrible reviews is, but it needs to stop.

Are you saying that a $1/minute per film (so $6 for a 6 minute film) for it to be hosted on Studentfilms.com for an ENTIRE YEAR is wasting one's money?

iFilm charges around $100 for that privilege.

If the only reason he is paying for it to be up there is to get reviews that actually help, then it is a waste of money, because some reviews don't mean crap.

...And some reviews are worth reading. I'm not saying that none of the reviews here are helpful. I'm just stating that some people are lazy and don't use constructive criticism.

Hey,

I usually don't review the films on this site since I focus on the ones at my own site, but if anyone wants me to review their film then just email me and I'll post the review here and on my site. I'm a fourth year film student so I think I have a good amount of knowledge to give the sort of reviews people are looking for. Anyway, if anyone is interested just stop by my site and email me and I'll be happy to help. Just be sure not to private message me on this board because I never check them.

Hope I can help,
Christian

I hate to keep having to say this, but its true. Yes morons come on this site and review films. They say moronic things that seem to make litle to no sense. That dosent mean you cant learn from them. Heres a lesson, get close to your computer. No, closer. Get right up there by the screen. You there? Ok....

MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO BUY TICKETS, AND POPCORN AND GO TO THE MOVIES EVERY WEKEND ARE IDIOTS!!! THEY ARE THE WORLDS BIGGEST MORONS!! THIS IS THE COMMON MOVIE GOER.

Sorry about that. Big Grin See, movies live and die by whethere or not people go to see them. So who is right, and who is wrong? If you plan on working in this bizz you will always have times where the "xXx's" will beat out the "Rabbit Proof Fence's" (insert other well constructed, non commercial film here.) Thats because people are idiots. Some cant follow a complex story, they have to see bright lights, and explosions to keep their interest.
So, should you ty and please em, or not? Depends. I try and find the middle ground. I wont make a film I dont believe in, but when im writting I ask, "Will this entertain people?" I also try to determine who it will entertain. Is this for kids, adults, women, what? Of course, when it is broken down to brass tacks, all the studios care about is money.
Try to learn from every review. Was the guy just stoned? Hell, most viewers have no idea why they liked something, they just do. Try and figure out why they did for yourself. Use every review in some way, even if its just to help reiterate that there are alot of ignorant movie goers out there, and as the old saying goes "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you cant please all of the people all of the time."

Ditto on what Tizzy said!

Actually, Tizzy and I are the same person! Wink [JOKE]

He's a short story about reviewing: "WHAT NOT TO DO"

*BTW...I thought this appropriate for this conversation.

So I get this dude e-mailing me twice to have my wife (if you follow what fine) take a look at his short, from this site. After the second e-mail I decide to be nice and check it out. I watched it "twice" then thought of what "specifically" the problems where. I then proceeded to write a lengthy reply (e-mailed) as to things that could be improved. Probably 45 minutes out of my day.

Guess what? No response, no thank you..... no nothin'!

The point is, this dumb kid broke rule #1 "Don't burn your bridges" (especially when you only get one chance with people at the top)! He was one person removed from "the goal line". Will he ever get another chance to make a good impression with me? Nope! Will he use my suggestions? I don't know, I never heard back. Will I remember his name or pass on the info. Absolutely not....

Even if you don't like or disagree with what someone says about your film, you thank them (especially if you are asking someone at the top to review it). You thank them for their time. You bite your tongue and keep that relationship "OPEN ENDED"! Just in case there is a next time. Which is inevitable. In other words, don't burn you bridges if you are a serious player, or intend to be one.

Be smart is all!

BTW... I have dealt with two other guys from this site that "understand" the right thing to do. Be o n e of those guys! "Making it" is very much about the politics of business and relationships. Learn to work the system. There is a system and a method to this madness.

Here's to the future, see you there!

Tha bad news is, i was that kid. The good news is, I directed him to someone elses film, so my bridge is just fine Big Grin

Just kidding folks.

As far as Jay's wife, and viewing films go, I never thought to e-mail him, and get her to watch it. (then again, I dont have a film up here yet) I figured it was the same type of relationship that me and my wife share. If I see something I really like, I say, "Hey honey, come take a look at this."
Id like to think if Jay was blown away by a film here (or anywhere for that matter) he would show it to his wife, given the opportunity for her to watch it arose.
Then again, she is very busy, and they may not spend as much time togthere as they would like. I gotta tell ya. If my time with my wfe is limited, getting her to watch films here isnt high on our "to do" list.

No one knows who surfs this site. Just because someone hasnt had a "discovery" experience from her yet, dosent mean it wont happen. Hey, if nothing else, root for me to make it. Ill keep comin back here, checking out peoples stuff. What was this post about again?? Big Grin

No, not a waste of money. I didn't say that but yeah, I think it is a very fair price to get all them viewers. I'm just sick of jack asses is all, but what can you do? Nothing really. I'm over past it now, enough said.

Jay and Tizzy(Mike by the way) have both helped me out tons...thanks. I've written back to many of folks over the last few months about questions they have for me and I love it, because I want to be a teacher some day, so it's nice practice, so yes yes yes keep the "thanks" coming to those who kick you knowledge, because those people are the ones who will bring you up.

Ok...hate to say "pretty good for a student film" but that's what I got to say. I mean the effects and editing were great for student level work and even independent work to say the least.

Very well done guys! I really liked how you used the window as a TV. I understand how hard it is to block when using CG as well, very nice blocking!

Kyle Johnson or what ever...what movies do you have on here again? Oh that's right, you don't have any...keep poor opinions to yourself if you don't have a film up.

This is a review from S. Tyler Wilson for the film "FIXED"

And people are calling me immature? Holy God!

What is this supposed to mean? Just because I havn't submitted a film to the website means I'm not allowed to review a film and express my opinion on it? That makes no sense...most the reviews on the films are by people who HAVE'NT submitted a film...and they don't need to. The website is not private where only people who have submitted are allowed to review films. I think I gave the film an honest review "star" wise. Maybe my actual reiew wasn't great...I could've went into detail on what was good about it but I didn't have time.

Acting I gave 3 stars. I didn't think the actors were that great.

Cinematography I gave 5 stars. I thought the camera angles and movements were very smooth...especially for the POV of Robots

Directing I gave 3 stars. I didn't feel that everything was really pieced together. A few scenes should have been rehersed first.

Editing I gave 3 stars. Someone else reviewed saying that the "cutting" between the guy on the TV phone to him in his home was bad...It was. The sound would just suddenly "jump" and get louder.

Screenplay I gave 2 stars because I didn't feel the story was that original. And was a little confusing.

So I'll keep posting all the reviews I want...don't matter whether or not I have a film up....and when I do, say what you want...I'll just refer to your "complaining" about bad reviews. Bull...who cares?

Oh, here's an idea, s. Tyler...how 'bout the only people that get to write reviews are people that make "good" films. Oh! I guess that cancels you out!!!

I'm entitled to my own opinion, no matter how useless and moronic is may sound to you.

I know I said I was done when it came to you, but wtf do u get off bashing S. Tyler for ? He has made some great films studentwise. And when your narrow mind finally discovers that its not the problem of you speaking your opinion it is how you do it that is immature.

Kyle, Listen, we talk about film on here. I'm not in the business to bash anyone. I've sat back and read too many of your post that went too far as respect and mature level goes, so I spoke on it...sorry for being real.

I have no problem I guess with people reviewing films with no films under their belts, no writing experience, no editing experience, no directing experience, AD, PA, or DP work...but where is the opinion really coming from?

That's it for now, glads to know you're doign research on my film reviews.
