"Confiding in Zeena"
I got a couple of e-mails asking questions about some story points and why I chose to use certain stylistic changes. Happy to talk about it and hear what you thought.
(pasted below)
I tried to do a genre change from beginning to end. Some say this is a bad idea, but I just had to try it. My intention was to make the film like a soup opera in the start, and end with a home video feel. In the start, more attention to lighting and a still camera. The spinning flower added to make you think you are about to watch some lame sappy love story. The short is also in wide screen at that point.
In the end I tried to make it look like a home video (aka porno) The screen evolves from a widescreen to a full screen to look like a home video. Hardly any attention to lighting. Also the camera jumps around a lot. Crappy cinematography on purpose (What a gamble) The problem that I was facing was that I did not want the style to detract from the story. And thay may have been the result.
Another question I got was: Was I trying to reference The Graduate stylistically with the shot of Zeena all dark and distorted after it is made totally obvious she is a ***** (when the plumber walks in). The answer is no, not intended. I wanted to reshoot that shot but could not because of time. I did however think it looks that way, as if it was done on purpose.
So I guess it kind of worked out but I would not prefer it to be that way.
Why did he tell her to put close on in the beginning? I threw this in at the last minute to make it seem like Adam was very protective of her, very formal so the ending would be that much worse when we found out she was doing a porno.
What is with the tooth brush in the beginning?
I tried to refernce the vibrator at the end. The vibrating sound they make is exactly the same and his reaction to both is similar. Though I don't think people notice unless they watch the film twice. I tried to throw lots of things in there like that. stuff that would pay off if you watched it a second time. Fun stuff just not mainstream.
Overall, I had a blast making it. If you liked watching it, well that just makes my day.
