"I just think its pretty sad when a 100 million dollar film can't even get original music for their trailers with so many good composers out there"

"The song in Sin City's trailer is not something that is already correlated with another movie, so that argument doesn't really stand well with what this post was about."

I thought your concern was trailers not using original music? If your concern is really trailers not using music you've heard before, that's totally different.

I've seen several trailers using music from Gladiator, and like you mentioned Blade Trinity used music from the Matrix. Of course, Blade Trinity is garbage, so it's to be expected that they won't display very much creativity about that kind of thing. I was somewhat annoyed when Sigur Ros popped up at the end of The Life Aquatic, since the song is so recognizable. It suited the movie reasonably well, but I think something less familiar would have worked better.

I actually liked that sigur ros addition to life aquatic. I don't think it's all that familiar. I mean, the majority of people in America don't know who sigur ros, much less would they be able to distinguish it in a movie.

Plus, I thought it was very fitting. It made it a lot more emotional.

Speaking of Life Aquatic ( **SPOILERS**)

did anyone else think the scene where the helicopter crashed was extremely emotional and well done?

Familiar to me, anyway. I don't really care how it came off to the average audience member, since I'm not able to transpose my mind into their skull.

It's just distracting when you immediately recognize the song - with Tarantino, most of the songs were not well known prior to the movies' release.

The Audioslave song in Collateral made me feel the same way. It's a great song, it was reasonably appropriate for the movie, but I thought it was too overt and recognizable. I prefer music to operate around the edges of perception, in unison with the image, but not calling attention to itself. I strive to work towards that with my own scores.

I thought the single downward-facing shot as the helicopter stopped, held for a moment, then plummeted was good. It really captured the sensation of free-fall.

music from edward scissor hands and the adams family are in the trailer for just about every whimsical/fantasy movie ever made. Most recently in the Lemony Snicket ad. As for life aquatic, I thought the part right after the helicopter hit the water was kind of interesting. They cut together a few shots of bubbles in the water at odd angles, and i think there was a flash of solid color in there as well. Also that first tinge of red water that hit the camera was great, very well timed. The sets in that movie were amazing.
