Oh my god. Oh my god....

I made it. It's so amazing. Watch it and review it, please. Comedy as an art form has peaked with this short film. It will never be topped.

I liked it, you have a real skill for comedy, and your shorts are always technically sound as well.

Having said that, the second you break away from the "conventional" humor expressed in ROCK THIS!, and move into more offbeat humor.....you will become a comedic god Mr. Alan Denton of the New Jersey shores. In fact, I want to see a pairing of Alan Denton and Dan Ryckert....my god that would be something special right there.

Keep up the great work, it's always a pleasure to view your stuff and have a nice chuckle (and at times crazy laugh out loud type screams).

I give ROCK THIS! ****1/2 out of *****, but since we don't have a half star system, I give all 5's.

We can't stop here, it's bat country!

I'm so far ahead of you, you have no idea.

Except for the part about teaming up with Ryckert. That would be sweet though.

This lacked any hard thought. I didn't like it. I even watched the entire thing just to be fair about it. I hope you weren't practicing your skills or anything. The audio wasn't good. I don't know if it was the compression, the web or what, but it was very high pitched...

the framing, lighting, camera angles and movement were all poor.

The acting was stupid.

The directing (hopefully had no weight on this one).

The editing was average... nice cuts on actions, although some of the take seemed rested before they start... you needed to clip a few seconds off of them or something. I guess you were going for that look I suppose...

I didn't like it. I think it was very nonprofessional. Do you really go to Tish? I have a friend who raves about that school and I was just wondering if this is type of stuff their students are doing... keep trying Alan.

i thought it was really funny. love the over the top acting and dialogue. C was right about the compositions though, it looks like you just handed the camera over to one of your buddies and let them shoot whatever, which, according to the credits, you did. so until you get someone who knows how to handle a camera to handle the camera, comedy has yet to peak as an artform. Frown

if youre looking for a witty signature, youre looking in the wrong place.

I liked it, not all of it, but a lot

Alan shows his talent in the non dialogue scenes, visually coolSmile

Acting: no more comments, especially Lo mein...eheSmile

and no, NYU wont let ya do a 20+minute film for class projectSmile I think he made it in his free time outside schoolSmile

Concerning audio. I realised that as well. But wituout a boom operator and crew, it is difficult to have high quality sound

all in all a nice movie with a lot of effort in it

As paradoxical as this sounds,

The more professional you are about making a comedy film, the more seriously your audience will take comedy.

There's the paradox: though it is a comedy, with the main purpose of making the audience laugh, at the same time you want them to take your film seriously. This is achieved by professional treatment of your medium (good lighting, acting, cinematography, editing).

If your film comes off as being amaturish in any respect, even in one respect, it ruins the integrity of the comedy. When this happens, the audience will throw it off as being just another bad student film, nomatter how funny the script happens to be.

My first two films were comedies. They blow. I'll never put them up on this site, and I do not advertise their existence. They suck so bad because of the reasons aforementioned.

I'm not judging your work alan, as I did not watch your film. This criticism is aimed towards those who have comedies on this site in general.

you can read my review of "rock this" on its review site. i am alexander gray.

i am more impressed with comedies (and generally laugh a lot more) when it appears a lot of thought and planning went into the project. a joke depends on so many variables to be funny on film, very rarely am i impressed with films that look like they were written on the spot.

Yeah. I go to NYU. I'm a freshman and I've only been here for 2 months and I made Rock This the summer before I started attending this school, but yes. I go here.

As far as the general comments about comedy, thought and planning *did* go into this movie, just more in some parts than in others. The montage and guard fight scenes, for instance. I thought those were cool...

Sound issues: yeah I don't have the best mic. It's a $50 shotgun mic. It's all i can afford right now, but I get by.

Acting: i don't know what you're talking about. It was flawless.

In the end, I like Rock This, but some of you don't I guess. I am interested in hearing your opinions though, so keep em coming.

Hilariously awesome. I don't see why everyone thinks technical cinematography is so important in a student film like this. As a matter of fact, I thought there were some nice shots in there and it's obvious there was attention to lighting (except a few scenes hehe).

Anyways, I thought the acting was hilarious. Especially Alan and James. Comedy is very subjective so there are definitely people who won't find this kind of humor funny, I do though. Actually I think Alan's stuff is the funniest on this site (including Reedy's works which I admire very much).

The editing was great also. I loved the cutaways to the stock footage at the end. Now that I think of it, the end sequence probably took a long time to shoot. Also good music choices. The sound could be improved a bit (compression and limiting) but I could catch pretty much every line.

With that said, I think the training sequence could have been cut down a bit.

Good job dude, I can't wait for what you come up with next. If you need any original compositions, let me know.
