how do people judge how to judge the films they review.... as i just judged a few and didnt notice till after that they were high school films...which would mean all 5's across the board for what they have achieved... but then, if you dont like it should you mark low?
i am sure we dont wanna hurt anyones feelings, as it is a very brave thing to do anyway just to put your film on the site..
I think people should be honest in their reviews. Everyone needs to know their mistakes so they can improve their work. It's annoying to me when I see people say "That was awsome" with all 5 stars. That doesnt help to improve their art. There has to be something they could imrove on. I think when film-makers put their work on this site, they expect it to be critiqued.
I'm brutally honest. i feel ok being that way because i am the same way with my own work. i don't care that i'm not in film school yet, i KNOW when something I did sucks
if i really like something i let them know, but i still point out what was bad about it. even if it was stuff they couldn't help.
of course, i'd NEVER bash something, ever.

the only thing that bugs me is when people give the Screenplay category 5 stars when it's something like a music video, or experimental edit piece, or something that doesn't really even need a screenplay.

I watched shaolin Sandwhich and REally likes it. But I still noticed all the bad things about it and told them so.
So you can really like someone's video but be honest and give them the points they deserve.

the weird thing is some movies should have different categories. like, how can you rate the acting in an animation? or, as R said, the screenplay in a music video? oh well - i just try to equate the odd rating category to something else in my mind lol.

I'm a failure as a reviewer, I can't give terrible reviews if it looks like they at least tried with their work. Plus, since they are student films, I don't really want to hammer them on technicals or having a godawful script. Dont wanna make anyone feel bad. i guess i balance out all the 1's all the hardass reviewers give. As far as screenplay on something that has no screenplay, i usually look to see what they sought to achieve with their film, then grade on how well they achieved it.

Well, really you should judge the voice acting if there is any and/or how well the characters faces emote.

yeah, animation can have acting, but the point is well seen - sometimes films dont fall into the rating categories that well - perhaps the site could offer an option that can excrete ratings? like if there really wasn't any "acting" or even "actors", just like...stock footage or something in the film--we could just not have to put anything? i dunno if that made any sense - but if it did- id be something to consider in the site suggestions-
