All these jackasses who bash the hell out of some films on here in their reviews, thats what im sick of. Constructive criticism is fine, but when i see *******s on here reviewing a film like they were ebert and roeper looking for oscar material on a site that begins with the word "STUDENT" in it, it really makes me think that the bashers have never even picked up a camera themselves. IF they had, they would know it takes a hell of a lot of work to get a movie, even a short film, up and running, especially while your still learning how to do it as a student. Those who actually get off their asses and make films instead of staying on their asses and just bashing everything else like you know what your talking about can relate to some mistakes and have good understanding of how much work and dedication it takes to make a film. Lazy critics make me sick...

Can you post up an example of one of these bashing reviews? I'm interested to see it. Generally, if it really is bashing Chris will take it down for you. No need to get upset, let's have a look, ok?

im not trying to complain to get a bad review off my film, i mean thats something someone just has to deal with, there will be good reviews and bad ones. I can be a big boy and take the bad ones on the chin, but it just bothers me the way some BASH, not criticize constructivly, but BASH films. Titanium Doughnut heres the example you requested...

Argh!
Vapid waste of time. No acting, shaky cinematography, Directing?: "hey guys run that way!" Editing was simplistic and obvious. Screenplay: I doubt there was one. Soundtrack, lazy use of pop songs. Student films can be so much more than point and shoot nonsense.
I'd have to say that's on the fence. It's not outright bashing like "this sucks you loser" but it's not very helpful or polite. I have not seen the film in question, so I'm not commenting on whether or not I agree with the statements made in that review, but whether or not they are true, they could have been said in a more critique-ish way...

ya, there review is fine cuz its talking actually on the actual work, not u personally. i got one review where the guy totally misinterpreted my movie, thus giving a poor review. im paraphrasing, but, he said, "this was terrible. why dont you stick to the usual trite that other highschoolers make. im sure it wouldnt be over ur simple head. im not allowing you to make another film till your potty trained."
that review is just completely rediculous. ive gotten bad reviews where people say lighting was poor, or the acting was terrible. those i dont mind, because it helps you know what to improve. calling people names and personally attacking u are unecessary, but if its about the movie, its a piece of work that is made to be critiqued

I know exactly what your talking about. On my film, the two most recent reviews are ridiculous. NOe is by the same guy you were talking about, egbert, and one is from a girl who said nothing useful and reviewed my film in what I saw as "revenge," probably for a film I gave a poor rating, but a useful review. Here they are:
EW! Stop getting your friends to write reviews for you. It's really bad dude. The whole thing. And don't write reviews for other movies when your movie obviously sucks more than theirs. You know what I'm talking about. Extremely unoriginal and boring. And bad soundtrack. And costumes. Ew. Barf. Bye.
He he at least you didn't get called unamerican! Here's my favorite bad review of my film:
I wish there was a propaganda genre on studentfilms.com. Twisting Dr. Kings words around is really low, really really low. Maybe next time make something original, don't jump on the political band wagon and take shots at Bush & Co (as fun as that is.)
For this to be called a documentary is absolutely disgusting.
He he I love it, can't really argue with it, its a reasonable opinion of course I don't agree but its reasonable.
If you're gonna get all butt hurt over a bad review its gonna be a long hard road for you as a filmmaker. Bad reviews are part of the deal even if they are part of some unseen bias. Just roll with it, I like the bad reviews because if you look hard into what they are saying its more usefull than some freinds saying "cool movie".
its funny because most of any bad review that anyone gets is someone saying "not original" which is complete crap seeing how originality is even scarced in the mainstream film industry, and the only way to be completely original is if you were raised by wolves and have never seen a movie before.

lol i am in no way butthurt by some ignorant assewipe's distorted opinion. By posting this i was just tryin to make the point that people who cant review films like grown ups shouldnt review period. I love hearing whats wrong with my film because i know what to fix next time i do one. There are critics and then there are ignorant people who've probably never even attempted to make a film before.

its called The Running Men, or you can just search under my last name, Somerville. I know its not gold, we shot it all in one day because it was a class assignment and i thought i had more time than we actually did. I wasnt happy with it but some fellow film makers told me to put it on here so i did.

Well, no offense, but if you know it's not that great and you can do better, then don't expect only positive criticism. Obviously, insults are out of line, but when you consider the usual caliber films people watch on here, videos shot in one day usually get the worse end of the critics' prodding stick. Very few people have the consideration to adjust thier expectations.
On the other hand, some films on here are just so good that people get jealous that they don't have that kind of talent and bash the film to make themselves feel better. I'll even admit I've done that in my mind (oh, that 20-foot crane shot was...was, jittery...)
If you think you could do better, definately go for it and don't be afraid to show off your talent. Odds are you'll still get the occasional bashing review, but at least you'll be confident in your work.
As you guys can expect, with the kinds of films I tend to make I attract my fair share of backlash, and for the most part I just read it over, acknowledge and respect it, grin and bear it, and move on. But I've still gotten the occasional bad review that I feel is totally unfair. Take this review for E.O. Smith Goes to Washington:
"....what the heck was that? i would rather have sex with b arthur than watch this film. that was pretty painful to suffer through & i hate to break it to the director, but adding music to random shots over & over again does not make them more entertaining. i can drive around like a moron & film cars & monuments & stuff to while blasting music too. that doesnt make it good.
- blake"
Now this dude is obviously a little less attuned to constructive criticism than most people, and obviously doesn't feel the need to pay as much attention to the films he watches as most people (watch E.O. Smith Goes to Washington and you'll see just how off base this guy is). And while that may not be his fault per se, I was still insulted by this review and can't understand how he thought this review would be an appropriate, constructive, helpful review of a student film, assuming he thought at all while he was writing it. I figure if that kind of cheap, deprecating s**t is all you have to say about something, then you should do humanity a favor and not say it.

Im sick of reviews where the writer is attempting not to give positive critiscm, but make a funny review. This might be okay when bashing the latest Uwe Boll film, but a student film, have a little respect. Here's an example
This film was neo-garbage, a string of rotten acting and tasteless camerawork. This film almost made me vomit. Maybe I can watch it on the set of you next film, and vomit, so the cast and crew will actually be fed. You should be ashamed of yourself for directing a pile of feces. Go and die, loser.
