this summer im going to film a horror short about 30 minutes. this will be my first big project that i plan on submitting to festivals and such, so want it to be more professional. Just wonder where i can get sound effects and music for a scary film. What sound effects do most people use for like jump scare scenes, and any recomendations for that scary type music most movies have, like violins and just soft stuff that sounds scary, and a lot of horror shorts i see just have weird random noises and stuff.

the scariest sounds you'll get are ones you make yourself. Find random sounds through your house, and process the hell out of them (you can use your NLE if you dont have audio software). if you have a good mic, great, but you can get away with the mic on your cam. Try random things, close your eyes to dissociate the sound from what it is. Like, for example, a fork scraped against a metal pot could sound good with some reverb and maybe some pitch shifting (just thinking off the top of my head), good example of something you should close your eyes to hear dissociated from what it really is. Try and think of what it sounds like instead. Go crazy, you'll have more fun, get higher quality sound, do it for free, and have a more rewarding experience in the end.

If all else fails, most folks here use sounddogs.com .

Re: the violins and stuff, synths are great, but if you arent a musician then try acid or another loop software, like audition (i looked back in your posts to check your platform and it looks like you are on PC right?), you may also want to look for public domain audio, try archive.org for that. good luck!

Yeah, have a stab at recording your own sound effects. Otherwise I'm sure a quick google search would help you out.

For music, there are composers here, and elsewhere that will write you a free horror movie score. I'd even do it. Send me an email some time and we'll discuss it. chrishurn@gmail.com.

Good luck,
