I wish to create a fly-through shot of a real world scene of an open ground. As if the shot were taken from a helicopter moving, zooming towards a moving car, moves side by side, and then moves far away... Without using a real helicopter can I use a small remote controlled helicopter and a remote controlled camera? I want to create it for TV. Please guide me if such accessories are available...

Wlcome to the boards! Smile

well, a real camera is likely much too heavy to attach to a remote control helicopter. and also, too expensive, incase there is an accident. i'd suggest trying to find what is sometimes called a lipstick camera, because its very small and light, like a lipstick tube. i THINK you can hook up a wireless transmitter to send the video.

Or maybe a really tall and long crane.

ACtually remote control helicopters is what they use now instead of helicopter shots for a lot of movies.

But they're not hobby store helicopters, they're especially built and rigged for cameras and shooting movies.

Yeah. I doubt that a remote helicopter that ISN'T specially made for such use will give you the results you want. They're too shaky and hard to control in precise dimensions as you've said.

Maybe a really tall crane, like McGrimlock said. That will still be pretty expensive though, and it probably won't look how you want it to look.

I don't know what to tell you. The only thing you could do would be to maybe find some way to get a helicopter ride. And that will be very expensive.

Good luck!

Get a camera with a lot of zoom (you know), get on a big ladder, and zoom some shots and pretend like your the helicopter. Just shoot some scenes. The only down part about this is that your shots won't be too long, but it doesn't cost much....

is even a remote helicopter practical? Unless you 'know a guy' it's gonna cost you thousands for the day. Plus, it's kind of hard to "run and gun" when you have a low flying helicopter disturbing everyone. Can you get a permit? Can you afford to get the ten million dollar bond you'll probably need for the helicopter stunt?

What about a zip line with a remote head? You can probably put that together for under a grand. Or you could do just a zip line for a hundred or so.

just brainstormin'

You could always expand your skills and try to model it in 3d max Wink it's really hard but it's an alternate suggestion.

3d enviroment you mean? Don't think that's what he wants, 3d max is 3500 $, it's easy to get it done a lot easier, be creative Smile

A resourceful person can find 3d max anywhere on the web, and the demo of max is completely unlocked for 30 days. You can also find pre-modeled environments and models. (3dcafe.com)

You can get your virtual camera to do the flythrough and as you get to the point where the real camera flythrough comes into play just crossfade or do something to that effect. Just a suggestion.

And by the way Gotan, I've only been using max for the last 2 months(self taught) and i've figured out how to model and do flythroughs of all sorts of stuff. You should try it! It's not too hard once you get the hang of it.

I've tried the zip-line idea myself a few times, the camera'a image becomes way too shaky to be useable. And assuming your zip-line is on an angle... which it probably is to get it going in the first place unless it's motorized. Your horizon will not be level. But, filmakers here never cease to amaze me so give it a shot anyway.

Yes I began modelling yesterday.. I mean trying to learn some 3d modelling, and I've got a little animation of a ball bouncing..

well anyway, I was just looking at some production foto's from Return of the King, and they used cords and camera's on it to get those fly shots of the horses battling and such. It look sreally cool because you can get very close to the riders/actors, it's very safe and it looks really good... so that's what I would do.. plus it's sucha cheap way..

if u no someone who has a van u culd set up a crane on top of that and start behind the car then catch up kind of lowering the camera so u r side by side with it, then get ahead of it, raising the camera as u go. that shuld do it.

I don't set out to make "art" I just try to make something with a beginning, middle, end, and some characters...the art seems to come during the process.

FINALLY I GOT IT !!
It is "CopterVision" which I was actually looking for. It is a setup with remote-controlled copter and a suitable remote-controlled camera. It is used by professionals for TV as well as Film productions. Just search for "CopterVision" in any of the search engines and you can find the manufacturers for the same.

I got the information from Indian Film Producers here and got it verified from Internet. Anyway, thanks for all your replies.

The problem is SOLVED.
