OKay, the halogen bulbs you can buy at home depot burn hot enough to register white. You find them with the track lighting bulbs. They are like 50w bulbs. Get some domed clamp lamps for them and your good to go. Use wax paper for diffusment, gels for color.

As for the key light... how about using one of the affore mentioned Halogen bulbs? The key light is just the strongest light source. Put it closer then the others.

I used this set up to light my last short "Intersection" the key light as well. Stills below.

Tizzy, I don't mind the repetition. I'm probably almost as proud as you are of those stills...I can say I know you.

And when is that thing on ABC again? I told all my friends about it, and then I forgot the date and time.

The thing on ABC will be July 19th (Sat.) it will air right after the 3rd round of the British Open. They say that should end around 1:00pm EST. Its a retrospective of the life, and works of Jack Nichalaus. Now, back to the show..

Yeah, Tizzy has been helping me with my lighting, and I bought a couple domed clamp lamps, and halogen lights (ran me 30 bucks altogether)...and while the store to get gels at was closed today (It's CANADA DAY!!!), I simply bought a blue halogen light...and I'll try that out.

But yeah, it does register as white on camera, which is hella important...

And that first shot, which I have seen millions of times, looks VERY GOOD...

50 watts is too weak for my blood. I use GE PH-211, 212 and 213's (75, 150 and 250 watts) as well as photofloods. These are closer to 3200k. While the halogens will read white (Pretty much anything will) it's nice to be as close to 3200k as possible in case you have to deal with mixed lighting conditions. The problem is that each of thes globes cost $4 a pop and the 213's and photofloods don't last very long at all. I would also recommend spending the extra dollar or two to buy the ceramic sockets for the clamp lights (At least if you go for the higher wattage globes).

On the topic of cheap lighting, I'm about to start filming a script and am trying to get my light set together. I have a dual 500 watt halogen tripod light pack which I got for like $30, but they're usually just too powerfull to use head on. Before with these lights I just use a white piece of foamcore to reflect the light, but that takes too long to set up and too much room. So I'm thinking about getting a translucent softbox like material, building a frame for it and putting my "softbox" on top of the lights, making them directional and diffused. I just hope they don't catch fire!

Anyway with this serving as my key light, i'm just going to need to make a nice backlight for cinematic look. Its hard to just have another one of these halogen lights behind someone, so I think I'll get one of the smaller, lighter 150 watt halogen spotlight things at home depot, make another softbox on it and maybe put a gel color on it. Any suggestions on how it can stick on the ceiling? Also, is it safe to use dimmers to pull down the 1000 watts, which probrally'll still be too hot even with a softbox? From what I hear it changes the light speed or something.

well i'm going to be using the handheld halogen light as my backlight. I beleive it's hangable but I'm still trying to figure how to. Don't worry about a fill light, even one key light for multiple subjects is fine. You just will be spending too much if you have a 3 point lighting set up for each of your talent in my case at least.
