I have plans to make a film soon which is about UFOS. I am wondering if people have any ideas on the most realistic way to film a UFO, bearing in mind I do not have the money to build a huge model. It's pretty vague but I'm jut wondering on different ways in which it can be done.

I won't say anything except this:

At this point, I think the word UFO should stand for Unoriginal Film Object. Wink

I was thinking about making a movie about UFO's and aliens but i was purposely going to make it look really, really cheesey cause I thought it would be cool. Didn't do it though.

if i were you, i'd base the ufo model after close encounters of the third kind. Those aren't complicated and should be pretty cheap to build, and are award winning.

Yeah, I did plan on doing a lot of that sort of thing. But I will need shots of the spacecraft on screen. Does anyone know of any sites with tips on how to build realisitc models.

Ha ha. No I never did. In fact, I never actually finished that screenplay. I might dig it out again one day and attempt a re-write.
But yes, I agree, if anyone does have an answer to the question I posed so long ago, feel free to add it. I'd still be very interested to hear possibl ideas.
On a related note, has anyone ever attepted to build any minature models for films they have made? (ie. houses, vehicles, landscapes, etc). Just curious I guess.

Sorry for diggin up an old thread (again) but I posted this a while ago:

http://qt.frozenphoenixproductions.com/gloryhill.mov

and it somewhat demonstrates the simplicity of adding in a UFO using CGI...it's actually not that difficult (I managed to do it...c'mon). I'd love to give you the model file but I deleted it a long time ago. It's pretty easy to recreate. I could probably write a tutorial if you needed it.

Since I made that video (over a year ago) I've learned the magic of motion tracking so to a degree, UFO's could be added on non-tripod shots as well.

I know it doesn't look entirely realistic but adding simple shadows and reflections of the environment goes a long way to adding realism. Sound effects also help in this respect as well.

Haha! The main problem with that was the really obviously simple matte around the trees it flew behind.

It was still cool lookin tho and I think the fact that it didn't look entirely real added to the comic effect of the shot.
