Hello,

I'm a new student filmmaker and I am working on an independent mini-series about some teenagers in high school. Since I am a high-school student, I am wondering how I could get permission to get permits for filming in public places and be taken seriously.

I would like to film in a school (hallways and entrance) and an abandoned warehouse/building, and I am not sure who I should ask permission of and how I should ask it.

Thanks,

OrpheusEffect

To shoot in the school you'll have to speak with the principal or other authorities in your school district. They'll probably be fine with it, most schools are.

For the warehouse, you could do one of two things: Approach the town authorities and ask their permission (just go to your town hall and ask to speak to someone about getting permission to shoot, it usually helps that you tell them you're working on a video for school), or just shoot at the warehouse without asking permission from anyone. By asking for permission, you take the risk of getting denied, and of course by not asking permission, you take the risk of getting caught. It's up to you. If no one is ever around this building, I'd say just go ahead and shoot, unless you're bringing a large crew and know that you'll be making quite a scene.

Eh, I say only truly committed filmmakers have the courage, stealth, know-how, and persuasion to film most anywhere they please without permission from anyone...filmmakers are free spirits, screw the bureaucratic bulls**t! Big Grin
