i have an old minidisc player/recorder that i was thinking about trying out to record sound with my shotgun mike.

I plugged the shotgun mike in it (the line in...there is no mic jack) and the signal is super low. i basicly have to scream into the mike with the volume on full to get any signal out of it.

Any ideas.

i actually tried recording with a minidisk and a shotgun for a film i did about a year ago. I ran the shotgun through a mixer and then into the mini disk, but I found the signal i was getting was too hot. If your levels are low, i would recommend is that you use an active mixer (one with an independent power source) and run the shotgun through the mixer and into the mini disk. does your shotgun mic require phantom power? usually shotgun mics that do not have a battery with them will require a low current 12v-48v circut between the mixer and the mic inorder to work properly. a majority of the mixers now have built in phantom power, and some require that you flip a dip switch or a switch somewhere on the body of the mixer. there could also be problems with your shotgun mic, have you tried recording on something other than you mini disk player? what kind of shotgun mic do you have? In addition to all of this, the line jack on the mini disk player is expecting a signal 10X hotter than the normal mic jack. a line signal is used when running long amounts of cable or when sending signals between mixers, if you were to use a mixer, make sure your output is on "line out"
