what is the 16:9 mode on them. does it just squeze them or is there two black bars on the top and bottom, and what will it stay 16:9 when i edit and transfer to videotape?

Hey ktabes. First off the 16:9 mode is called an aspect ratio. What that means is that if you consider the length across the bottom of the screen to be 16, then the height if 9. It's kind of like a box. If the length of the box is 16, then the width is 9. What this does then, is it gives the picture a more wider angle, so the viewer can see more of what's on the sides of the picture. This will have the black bars on the top and bottom. When you capture/transfer the video of your computer you will have to set your capture settings correctly to capture it at 16:9 mode. if you don't the image will appear stretched vertically and look funny. The reason they have these is so you can see more on the sides and it gives more of a "natural look" because when we see out of our eyes we can see more on the sides and less vertically in our eye sight. You can also see aspect ratios on the PS2. In he options you can set your aspect ratio for the screen. Hopefully that helped.

i know what aspect ratios are. i had a question to a person who owns either camera, because the other day i was playing around with a gl1 and the 16:9 mode was it just sqeeze the image and made it look funny.

I have a gl2 and I know what your talking about. It may look funny on the monitor when it's in 16:9 mode, but it'll be fine when you capture it. I had the same question as you when I first got it, so I did some research... You need an anamorphic lens added on to get true 16:9 otherwise your wasting part of your ccd's capabilities to generate black bars. Wink But if your looking for just those black bars it'll work fine the way it is.

what diego said is 100% correct... another way to do it is if you are just looking for the 16:9 look. the easiest way to do it is to turn on the 16:9 guide on the gl2, frame up your shots to look good with the guide, then in post, just crop the top and bottom... i dont know what you edit with, but in FCP its just a filter that you can drop on all your clips and customize, the downside is that it takes some render time. basically when you film in 16:9 mode without an anamorphic lens, the camera crops the top and bottom and streches your image.

check under the effects tab under video filters... i think its called widescreen or something, not sure if express has the filter or not, but if it does i would highly reccomend shooting in standard 4:3 and then using it

Yea. but if you're not shooting with an anamorphic lens, you're just really cutting down on your viewing area and the size of your image, so to get the framing you want that you'd get with an anamorphic lens, you'd have to zoom out more, and that will make your characters/objects smaller on screen.

yeah, that's exactly right. i have i a gl1, which is (obviously) similar to the gl2, and i ran in to some problems using the 16x9. i hear the gl2 has guides you can put in or whatever, on the gl1 your only option is to stretch it. since you're just cutting off some of your pixels, it doesn't really make the image feel like a true widescreen.

also, it imported into premier fine, but trying to export it was a huge pain. even if i selected the 16x9 modes, it would consistantly export it to a stretched 4x3. it was a huge pain.

i realize it's not the exact same camera, but they are similar, and those are my experiences.
