I'm shooting a music video in the summer that requires slow motion. I've done my research on what is available for this. I can't rent out a varicam (Too expensive) and shooting on film is out of the question since I've never shot on film before. So my only option is to do it in post with either twixtor or re-timer. (Both of these plug-ins suggest the footage be shot with a camera that does progressive scan rather than interlaced footage for clarity purposes) My question is which type of Mini DV or HDV cams would you suggest? Apparently the JVC GR-HD1 camera can shoot 60P in SD mode... Is this true? If it is wouldn't it be better for slow-motion than other cameras like the XL2(Up to 30P only) and the DVX (Only 24P)? What do you think would look better for those slow-motion shots? Footage shot on the JVC in SD mode at 60p slowed down in post, or footage shot on the new sony HDV camera in much higher resolution but only at 30p and slowed in post? Other suggestions? (I only need to capture members of the band jumping up and down in super slow motion not stuff like water drops freezing in mid air... although that would be cool).

On another note, I'm open for suggestions about what camera I should rent out for the shoot. I need a camera that shoots 16:9 In native format. Also, if I filmed my footage on a dvx for example at 24p and put it in my GL2 to capture to my computer,is it #1. Going to playback? and #2. Is it going to turn my footage into upper and lower fields? Will this defeat the purpose of shooting progressive?

first off, i see where you are going with the 60/30/24p thing...here are the q's. Do you need to shoot HD? do you want the overall shoot to be 24 or 30 fps? I'd nix the JVC after all i have read about its lackluster performance. HDV has left a sour taste after most of the reviews i have read. SO personally i'd lean towards the 24p mode on either the dvx or the xl2. I use a dvx, but if i were to spring for a new cam it would definitely be the XL2 right now for its additional features that i think make it worth the extra chunk of change (its $4300 right now on B and H). So that all depends on your needs.

How slow are you going, and how much of the video is slow mo? That affects the decision as well.

Re: throwing it into your GL2 to dump it in, I havent used a GL2 but i do you a $350 Shard piniDV cam as a deck and have gotten 24p to come out fine (using 24p standard, not advanced - havent had a need to try that yet).

Good luck with it!
