The camera i own does not have an external mic input so there's no way i can record sound with a mic unless i use some other recording device and then sync it in post. Does anyone know if you could use a digital voice recorder (the digital equivalent to a tape recorder basically) to record an external mic's input?

I think you should be able to do that with a digital voice recorder. The key is making sure there's an input for the external microphone and an analog to digital converter mechanism (which I think is usually built in).

I've never used one personally, so I can't speak from personal experience.

A digital voice recorder is going to sound worse than your camcorder's mic. The recording quality is really low in these things to maxamise recording time. A plain ole tape recorder will work better, but your best bet on the cheap is a minidisk recorder. Just make sure you have an input jack on it.

he's definitely right. not only do voice recorders low res the audio significantly, but they throw away a large part of the sound too, as they focus strictly on the vocal frequencies, much like telephones do. Safe to assume you wont get much outside of 800Hz - 3000khz. Mini disc is a good idea as an alternative, make sure you dont use the lower res recording options, as these will do similar damage to your audio.
