i built these light stands from PVC pipe. the bottoms are filled with sand to keep them from falling over.
cost for each stand: $8,
cost for each light fixture: $6,
cost for each bulb: $5
cheap and effective three point lighting. i can place some paper in front of a bulb to diffuse it for fill.
