Can you use DVCAM tapes in the DVX-100 and still get the benifit of a higher quality image?

No on two counts.

DVCam is a Sony format only (Works in some Ikegamis too). I do not know if it would work at all to put a mini-sized DVCam tape in a DVX-100. I rather doubt it as the track is wider on DVCam

Also, DVCam doesn't offer a higher quality image (They are the same). The benefit of DVCam is that it has an extra track for audio and I think has more reliable timecode.

I'd use normal MiniDV tapes if I were you.

for all your format questions and more!

p.s. The audio quality of DVCAM is neither higher quality nor is there an extra track. Simply, the audio recording is precisely locked in time with the video, versus miniDV where it's allowed to shift a lil bit. Once again, Adam Wilt is your man on this one.

I never realized MiniDV was capable of 2 channels of audio. I guess they just don't design many cameras to take advantage of it. Thanks for the clarification. Smile

well two channels is just left and right. all cameras do that. but if you record 12 bit instead of 16 bit, it can record two tracks on one channel and two tracks on another, since it's not as much information.
