Assuming they are the same price, is the DVX100a that much better?

Ehh, normally I would say the DVX...but at 425 hours, I'm not too sure how much the heads are going to last you. It sounds like it's been through a lot. Keep checking around on prices for a used DVX. You'll get a good deal, especially since the recent price drop in new DVX100b's.

I would pass on both of those deals. Its very hard to get shots with the GL2 that don't look like decently framed home videos.

braininabox,

Is there a specific camera that you would recommend that is in the $1500 range?

I disagree. I think with a touch of color correction you can make it look semi-professional.

I saw this trailer:

and figured the GL2 must be decent for a beginner camera.

That whole movie was shot with a GL2!

I recognize the effect. It's an aftereffects filter, if I'm not mistaken. Still, they must have done some serious color correct and had a non-stock lens to get a picture that good.

Here is the thread where the guy responds to how he shot this.

http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=40437&highlight=gl2+movie

His name is Jim Cole and he answers a lot of questions about the look and how he got it.

Apparently he used the stock lens on the GL2!
