So, new camera. Definately looks like a great improvement. Some iteresting new features. Focus storing? WTF? I've read panisonic's literature, but am still unclear. Anybody know anything more about the DVX100As focus storing feature?

I still think the thing sucks.

That's odd. I thought Josh would welcome the improvements of the DVX100A. Didn't you complain the DVX100 felt flimsy? Don't you think the new magnesium alloy body will fix that?

The material that the body is made out of is not the only thing that I don't like about the design. I will give credit to Panasonic for improving it that much, but it's more of the placement and design of the camera that I don't like. Most of all, the audio controls are in a spot that could very easily be hit when either holding the left side of the cam or taking out/putting back the LCD screen. This could easily ruin a shot or an entire production if you forget to check it and readjust it. The other thing is the XLR ports; they're on the lower front instead of the upper front, making it near impossible (or just difficult) to plug in a cable while also holding the cam with your right hand. Those are important things to me.

The VTR joystick thingy is also very flimsy and would break off very, very easily. Especially if you're frantically fast-forwarding and rewinding to try to cue up a tape or find a scene (which I've had to to).

This is just my opinion, take it or leave it.

Ok all DVX100 bashing aside LOL

From what I understand the whole focus storing feature is something that allows you to set focus marks that it will hit throughout the course of your movment (IE: If you had a focus puller you would set points tha the ring needs to be at for each mark the actors hit (or the camera on the move hits) so if someone was at a door thats one mark, they walk to the couch another mark, move to the kitchen ext) It sounds sketchy though. I dont know if you like key it in or hit a button on each move or what.

It will have auto focus for 30p and 24p but thats for the lazy. It will do a digital 16x9 like the XL1 (which compresses all the avaliable res inbetween the black bars allowing a bit more than if you simply croped) but its not true anamorphic. The hevier duty body id ok but its just extra weight. It also dosent have removable lenses alowing for prime lens use (there is an adapter already for the DVX100) About the only neto feature is the slower shutter speed.

All in all for the extra $2000 it will cost (I got my dvx for under $3000 this will be $5000) Im not upset I already bought the older model. An anamorphic adapter and Im shooting 16x9. If Im upgrading im getting its bigger brother, or a varricam HD.

pope, of course it's a different product. there's not any mention of the new model on the company's website, as I can see...

But if you have even more cash, you can waste it on an even more expensive camera

how does it compare? does the dvc200 offer the same film-like image than the dvx100?

In short, no it dosent give the DVX100 like image.

Now there is the AJ-SDX900 DVCPRO CINEMA camera. This is the DVX's big brother. It can use prime lenses, records on DVcam tapes so higher res, true 16x9 and it has a more advanced set of color controls much like the HD varricam.

Of course it cost $25,000 and thats WITHOUT a lens.
